families aided by the farm security
administration totaled 7.566 at the
end of the 1D37-1938 fiscal year July
1 as the program of the United States
department of agriculture to place
low-Income and handicapped farmers
on a self-sustaining bails assumed a
permanent status under the Bank
head-Jones farm tenant act, Clifford
L. Smith, state director, announces.
, Loans for livestock, machinery,
feed, seed, cooperative facilities and
other capital goods totaling 3,708,
159 have been extended to 8139 Ore
gon farmers unable to secure credit
from other sources by PSA and the j
former resettlement administration,
Collections on loans, the majority
scheduled for repayment over A five
year period, totaled 676,540, with
over 83.5 per cent of maturities due
being met and 274 loans paid In
full.
"A farm and borne plan worked
out by the borrower In cooperation
with the county F8A supervisor pro
vided a balanced livestock and crop
ping program for each farm, max!
mum home production of family
food needs and record keeping to
provide a guide for efficient man
agement," Smith said.
County adjustment of farm debt
services available to all farmers In
the state resulted In adjusting debts
of 545 families from a total Indebt
edness of 93,130,086 to ! .333.287,
together with payment of 134,113 In
back taxes, Adjustments were ef
fected by consolidation, refinancing
and time extension brought about
through friendly negotiations be
tween debtor and creditor.
Attacking the rapid growth of
farm tenancy, six tenant-farm pur
chase loans were made In Linn
county this year and Improved ten
ure agreements were negotiated for
764 farmers.
Yamhill farm resettlement project
begun by the resettlement adminis
tration, was completed by Pa A and

Preparatory to opening of the Bart-
let t pear picking scaaun within tha
next week or ten days, growers have
started bringing their pears to the
county agent's office for testing for
maturity. The tenting will ne in full
swing by U:e first of next week.
There has been no change In the
Bartlett pear cannery price, with the
ennnera making no offers, and show
ing no apparent Interest In the local
field. Reports have been received of
blocks of California Bartlotts selling
for 916 per ton for No. i grades.
Growers In both California and the
Yakima valley, take the attitude this
price Is too low.
Packing plants of the valley expect
to start Monday, August 16.

Collision Fatal.
TACOMA, Aug. 5. yp) Clyde Mc
Arthur, 38, of Tacoma, died lit a hos
pital here last night from Injuries
received In a head-on automobile
collision five miles south of Tacoma
on the PAclflc highway.

IN CRATER LAKE
ON BANNER DAY
A report from Superintendent S. P.
lAavltt'a oiftca Indicate! that the
ceaaatlon of the spawning mood In
Crater lake trout apparently Increased
the creel of anglers manifold during
the past two weeks.
The banner day of the season for
fishing was July 25 when 43 trout
and sllverslde salmon were caught.
These 43 were caught by 15 anglers
who fished a total of 24 hours. They
used eight boats In their activities.
From these data It follows that 1.8
fish were caught by each boat per
hour of angling on that particular
day.
During the week July 24-31, three
rainbows were caught that weighed
T lbs. 9 oz., 7 lb. 8 oz., and I lb. 8 oz..
respectively. Their respective ages
were 8, 8, and 7 summers. This shows
that these particular fish gained
about 1 pound per year of life while
In Crater lake.
Angling In Crater lake during this
season has found most success by
ironing witn the Dave Davis flasher
type lure. Doe Sheltons, Andy Rlek
ers and trouterlnos have had fair
success.
Deep trolling, with tho aid of cop
per line, at depths of 30O feet has
proved successful.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 6. IIP) The
war department allotted 9400,000 to-
day to start work of restoring the
north Jetty of Coos Bay, Ore.

PROTESTS ARE HEARD

the protests of residents of the Mid
way rood district, against odors aris
ing from (be operations of the floutu
ern Oregon By-Products company, lo
cated about three miles northeast of
this city. A. W. Metzger, assistant
chief of the state agriculture depart
ment la conducting the hearing.
The by-products company la en
gaged In the reducing of dead ani
mals to tallow for soap, a stock food,
and other Items. The protestanta al
lege the, smell Is rancid and annoy
ing. Impairs We value of their
property, and is Injurious to their
health. The testimony showed It was
worse In the evening when the air
is quiet.
A half dozen witnesses testified
Thursday afternoon when the hear
ing started, and as many more were
due to be called today. The bearing,
expected to be concluded today, was
started last June, when It was ad
journed. The only objection registered Is to
the odor arising from the cooking
process. It Is contended this oan be
eliminated by using different oper
ation methods.
Supervisor Named.
SACRAMENTO, Aug. 5.At-GoV.
Merrtam today announced the ap
pointment of Robert D. Adler, Cres
cent City, as a member of the board
of supervisors of Del Norte county.
He replaces the late Joseph Le Jasse,
Crescent City.

Sardine-Stuffed Eggs
13 hard-cooked eggs
1-3 cup sardines
34 cup minced celery
1 tablespoon minced pickle
1 teaspoon lemon Juice
1 tablespoon salad dressing
H teaspoon salt
Cut eggs in half lengthwise. Re
move and mash yolks with a fork.
Add the rest of the Ingredients to
the yolks. Roughly refill the egg
white cases. ChiU. Garnish' with
minced parsley and a dash of pap
rika. Serve.
Cheese-Filled Celery
18-alx-lncn celery sticks
1-3 cup Roquefort cheese
3 olives, chopped
H teaspoon paprika
teaspoon minced parsley
3 tablespoons cream ,
Mix together the cheese, olives,
paprika, parsley and cream. Stuff
celery and chill. Arrange spoke-fash-Ion
on a flat plate or tray. Garnish
with cress or parsley.
Vegetable Salad Ron!
3 cups sliced tomatoes
1 cup sliced cucumbers
1 cup sliced radishes
1 cup diced celery
1 cup cooked asparagus '
ft cup chopped green peppers
Y cup chopped plmlentos
cup chopped onions
14 teaspoon salt
3 cups shredded lettuce
Uj cup French dressing
Mix Ingredients and chill for two
hours or longer. Serve In a bowl
which has been lined with crisp salad
green. Pass additional salad dressing
or mayonnaise.

Murooned Cat Thrives
SAN FRANCISCO (OP) A cat
which was trapped in an Inaccessible
recess of a downtown building hers
has been kept alive for the past
three months by the guests of an
adjacent hotel who throw food to
it. The cat appears to be tnnving
and gives no evidence of a desire
to return to the uncertainties of
life as an alley cat.
