Festival Is Assured
Curtain to Rise at 8:30
When the curtain rises on Hamlet
at the Elizabethan theater la Ash
land tonight there will be present the
largest audience to attend an -opening
performance in the tour years of
the Oregon Shakespearean Festival.
The advance ticket sale for the
premiere has been larger than for any
opening show since the festival was
Inaugurated four years ago, the man
agement announced. . Nevertheless
seats are still available In the big
open-air playhouse and tickets may
be procured at the box-office tonight.
To clarify some confusion that
seems to exist, the management em
phasized today that It la not neces
sary to be a sponsoring member to
attend the plays. Anyone may attend
, any of the eight productions simply
by buying a ticket. Tickets tor Indi
vidual performances may be pur
chased here at Prultt's Muelc and
Radio Center, 111 West Main street,
or at the theater the night of .the
play.
Drama Editor Here
That the Importance of the festival
has spread beyond the confines of
southern Oregon was evidenced again
today with the arrival of Harold
Hunt, drama editor of the Oregon
Journal who arrived by plane from
Portland to report tonight and to
morrow night's plays for his news
paper. A United Malnllner made a
special stop at Medford municipal
airport this forenoon to discharge Mr.
Hunt. He was met at the airport by
Miss Doreen Leverette, Medford stu
dent at the Cornish school of drama
In Seattle who is taking part in this
year's series of plays. .
Mr. Hunt left for Ashland this
afternoon to Inspect .the Elizabethan
theater, fashioned after the Globe
theatre of Shakespeare's time, and to
Interview Angus L. Bowmer, festival
director and head of the drama de
partment of the Southern Oregon
Normal school.
As further evidence of the national
fame attained by the festival, Holly
wooa taient scouts are expected to be
Inconspicuous but observant mem
bers of the audience at several of the
plays.
To get to the Elizabethan theater
from here one turns right at the First
National bank in Ashland and pro
ceeds a short distance up Pioneer
street. There Is smple car parking
space In the vicinity.

GILBERT REVEALS
DEFINITE EFFORT
General Secretary of Funda
mentals Assn. Speaks at
Baptist Church Educa
tional Evil Held Growing
Speaking beforu t. large audience
In the Baptist church last ntght, Dr
Dan Gilbert or Son Diego. Cal. and
Washington, D. O., general secretory
of the World's Christian Fundamen
tals association, presented startling
facta and evidence showing the ex
istence of a definite program for
communlzlng American youth
through certain educational systems.
Dr. Gilbert, speaking here through
the sponsorship of the Oregon Chris
tian Fundamentals association and
the Truth for Students movement,
told his audience that testimony
presented before the house of re pre
sentatlvea sub-committee of lie 19S0
congress demonstrated that a- group
of communistic professors, centered
largely In Columbia university, feave
set out to soviet Ire America through
the control and dominance of state
schools throughout the country.
He dldnt condemn all schools and
all teachings, but stated positively
that la many of our colleges and uni
versities, and even In tiigh schools,
subversive education was faqt. He
warned that unless an alert citizenry
and group of teachers were ready to
fight against such radical tendencies
In so-called "progressive' education,
such a situation was possible right
here in Medford. In a clear and pre
cise manner, he presented the evils
of that which are growing In many
schools throughout the nation.
Dr. Gilbert also cited numerous
textbooks now in uso in schools In
which communistic, fascist and un
moral doctrines are taught. He calted
attention to the manner In whldi
such doctrines are contributing heav
ily to the crime wave.
"I feel that education In general
In the United States la deficient be
cause It leaves out moral and spirit
ual teachings," Dr. Gilbert said.
Under the statute espoused by the
World's Christian Fundamental as
sociation, all teachers upholding such
doctrines wolud be ousted from their
positions. Dr. Gilbert told his audi
ence. The campaign of the associa
tion, being carried out under his di
rection, contemplates an active fight
In every state In the union for legis
lating against the teaching of athe
ism, communism, fascism and other
antl-CiirlBtlan, doctrines In tax-sup
ported schools. s
Dr. Gilbert left Medford this morn
ing for Roseburg. where he will speak
on the same subject tonight.
