Craters, from Manager Rickert on
down, are not losing any sleep over
the prospect of facing Koll. They
point out that, In two appearances
against the Crescent City ace already
this season, they beat him, 4 to 0,
and rapped him for 14 solid smacks
In the 6 to 7 verdict they lost.
The Medford Infield will again
be changed Sunday, with Orvall
Hampel, second baseman, ex
changing positions with Hilly
Calvert, guardian of the hot spot.
Hampel covered a lot of ground
around second base and fielded
his position nicely, but Just
couldn't get the hang of pivot
play on double killing. He has
a strong arm, so should be able
to take care of third base In
great shape and, how he hits.

Although Koll Is a good left-handed
pitcher, he doesn't seem to have the
proper delivery with which to fool
left-handed hitters to any great ex
tent. No more ao, anyway, than a
good right-handed pitcher. Roll's
curve ball, while sharp, Is not very
big. It doesn't come up there and
sweep away, but takes a sharp drop
while bending outward from a south
paw batter only a little bit. It Is
a good curve ball, make no mistake
about It, but It doesn't seem to
bo wide enough to bother left-hand
ed hitters.
Aa proof of that fact, take the
case of Paul "Hoosler" Hoffard, Med
ford's slugging centerflelder who
clouts from the left side of the
plate. We have aeen Hoosler play
ball hereabouts for the past 10 years.
and until Koll appeared On the base
ball horizon there probably wasn't I
southpaw pitcher In the world who
couldn't make Hoffard look help
leas at the plate. He was always
simply handcuffed by a left-handed
pitcher, good or bad. All the south
paw hurier had to do was wave his
left flipper at Hoosler, and the big
boy folded up.
Koll, however. Is a real country
cousin of Hoffard's. In their last
meeting, the Crater clubber blasted
a triple and three singles off Mike's
southpaw delivery, and In tne pre
vious game reached him for a triple
In the clutch. To Hoffard. Koll Is
Just another pitcher, and the same
goes for Tommy White, another Med
fordlte who swings from the left
side of the dum. Bob Smith who.
like Hoffard. Is generally weak against
southpaw pitching, smashed a home
run and a couple of singles off Koll
the last time he faced him.
So. from past performances. It
doesn't look like Koll will add fur
ther proof to that old baseball
axiom. He might beat the Craters,
but If he does we'll wager It won't
be Just because he throws left

that there Isn't a semi-pro pitcher

dustrial stocks In today's market
and neglected numerous other Is
sues. In an exceptionally alow session
of mild ups and downs, steels and
motors were able to finish with gains
running to a point or so. But top
marks were whittled down near the
close and losses of moderate pro
portions were plentiful.
