HOME IN APPLEGATE
EOF
Bid APPLEGATE. July 8. (Spl.)
Thieves were loser a package of
soda which they dropped In the
barnyard In making their escape
with 30 worth of groceries and
other articles from the Jack O'Brien
home on the alternoon of July 4.
Mr. O'Brien left for Ashland about
3:16 p.m.. leaving his home un
locked, and during nil absence the
house was ransacked, and well cleared
of a fresh supply of groceries, In
eluding lard, soap, canned foods,
tc. A quilt a patr of silk hose, snd
a supply of women's handkerchiefs
also were taken. Bedding was left
on the floor, and dresser drawers
and a cedar chest ransacked.
The pilferers narrowly escaped
being caught, for Mr. O'Brien's son,
Donald, picnicking on the river wltn
friends, came to the house for a
few minutes during the afternoon,
and noted bedding in disarray. Fur
ther disorder was seen upon the
return of the family In the eve
nlng. showing that the house had
been entered at least twice.
It Is believed that the work might
have been that of strangers parked
nearby repairing a tire as Mr. O'Brien
left for Ashlsnd.

Diary Found Beside Body
Bares Domestic Tragedy
8AN FRANCISCO. July .(UP)
A little black diary last night revealed
the tragic course that In 15 months
led Thomas MeBarron, San prandaco
typewriter salesman, from a happy
marriage to suicide In a Pittsburg,
Cal., hotel.
The diary was found beside hie
body. He had apparently read through
It again before he knelt beside the
bed and shot himself through the
head, a golden crucifix clutched In
his hand.
MeBarron made his first entry In
the diary March 1, 1937,, as he pre
pared to leave for Portland. Ore., to
claim his young bride, "Mickey."
"I am leaving for what will be the
happiest time of my life." he wrote.
"I pray God I may be good enough
to deserve the happiness He has
brought me."
The entries for'' the next . three
months were on a note of happiness.
Then June 31, 1937, he wrote:
"Mickey struck me today during
an argument. We had been shouting
at each other when she suddenly
flared up and hit me In the face. A
few minutes later as I stood In front
of an open window, she pushed me."
That was the turning point in
the real-life novel that lay on the
ruled pages of the little black diary.
There were days of happiness, but
more and more the entries took on
a vein of despair. One sentence hint
ed at the tragedy to come:
"How easy It would be to commit
murder," he wrote.
The story went on through his
wife's divorce early this year and
after that there were only broken.
Irregular, hurried notations. "No
breakfast; no lunch no dinner." he
wrote in, day after day. until the
entries ceased altogether.
Last Sunday MeBarron found
Mickey In a car with another man
outside a tavern near Pittsburg.
In the scuffle that followed, he
beat his former wife snd shot her
twice, and also shot the tavern
keeper who tried to interfere. Nei
ther was critically wounded, but
MeBarron fled Into ,the hills and
finally found his way to the hotel
room.
Mc Barron's last note was made
on the back of a picture of his
beautiful wife, tucked Into the
diary. In a shaky hand It read:
"Mickey Dear: How I dread thia
holiday. Just a year ago we were so
happy. Just three weeks ago you
were in the arms of the rat who
stole my home. I Just can't stand
it. Tom."
