Christmas
Trees work the
year 'round
THEY SET the river on fire
actually the day in 1804
when they brought in the first
American oil gusher. A boring
in a salt well on the land of
a Kentuckian named Lemuel
Stockton suddenly became a
geyser of oil which spewed
thousands of barrels of crude
into the Cumberland River.
Something perhaps lightning
set the oil afire and the river
burned for forty miles a river
of flame.
But gushers aren't being
done any more. At the first
sign of production a Christmas
Tree is clapped on a well. This
is a complicated system of pipes
and valves called a Christmas
Tree because of its general
shape and many branches de
signed to control pressure.
Not only does this control
prevent waste and danger of
fire, but it conserves the natural
forces which lift oil from the
depths to the surface of the
earth. Nature's mighty hand is
thereby induced to exert over a
long period energy which other
wise would be exhausted in one
prodigal outburst.
The longer a well can be in
duced to retain its natural flow,
the longer the period before it
must be put "on the pump,"
the less the production cost of
crude and the less the price at
which gasoline can be provided
to the motorist.
