Too Many Drunks
For Portland Jail

spirits who took the holiday week
end for the occasion of a drunk got
off lightly In municipal court because
there were so many of them. Con
fronted with 160 drunk' charges, tho
court found It Impossible to send the
wayward to Jail. Those who could
pay a nominal fine were freed upon
remitting It. while the others, after
being sent to jail for luncb, were
freed.

OCEAN SHIP READY
FOR COLUMBIA TRIP
PORTLAND. July A. OP) The
ocean freighter Charles1 L. Wheeler,
Jr.. arrived here last night prepara
tory to her voyage Friday and Sat
urday up the Columbia river as the
first ocean vessel ever to attempt
navigation to The Dalles.
The Wheeler, accompanied by the
coast guard cutter Onondaga, will
leave here Friday noon, expecting to
arrive at Bonneville dam locks at 7
p. tn. The following morning at
i. m., will mark the start of a
mid-Columbia celebration of the first
use of the locks by an ocean vessel.
