Wanted,- the Facts
E hope James Roosevelt does sue Alvin Johnson and the
Saturday Evening Post for the former's story in this
week's issue on James' career as an insurance salesman.
For such legal action would undoubtedly bring out the
facts, and we would like the facts.
For a long time, the grape vine has reported that the
President's oldest son capitalized his position in a Boston
insurance firm selling insurance to important individuals and
business concerns, with a promise direct or implied, that the
larger the purchase, the better the chances of the purchaser
enjoying favors from the White House.
If that is true then James should be driven out of public
life, and his license as an insurance operator revoked by the
state of Massachusetts. For a young man who would do that,
would steal sheep or filch money from the baby's bank.
Such action, if it couldn't be classified as grand larceny,
could be properly termed getting money under false pretenses
And Boston Massachusetts has the Ponzi precedent to follow
in a case like that.
N the other hand if James can prove that he never made
any such promises, direct or implied: that while it is
probably true a great deal of insurance business came his way
because of his position he did nothing to encourage that type
of business, in fact, went out of his way to DISCOURAGE it
then son James can be absolved from any wrong doing, or even
moral callousness, and the alleged insurance scandal can be
consigned to the ash can where it belongs.
In this case, as in so many others concerning the present
administration, we are quite sure there are thousands of people
who fervently wish they could get the facts. They hear this,
they hear that, this is denied something else is supported,
they don't know what to believe and what not to believe, they
wish there were some way of getting the TRUTH.
A suit for libel against the Post should reveal the truth
regarding this particular juicy morsel. We hope son James
instructs his attorney to institute it. But somehow we have a
hunch he won't I

Give Death a Holiday Too!
TTIE Fourth of July falls on Monday this year . , . that
means an extended week-end at the beach, in the mountains
or mingling with carefree celebrating crowds. It will be a
grand holiday for most everyone, from baby to granddad.
Unfortunately, DEATH will NOT take a holiday if he
follows his activities of previous Fourths of July. It's bis
busy season 1
Shocking statistics show a steadily mounting death toll
every year as a result or various torms ot ceieDrating juiy
Fourth. It is an ironic fact that MORE Americans have died
in CELEBRATING their independence than died in the war
that gained it I Over 10,000 were killed in accidents last July,
many of tjiem in Independence Day outings and jamborees.
Isn't it time to combine SANITY with CELEBRATING?
HIGHWAYS will be jammed this week-end; beaches and
swimming pools will be crowded. CAUTION must take
the place of CARELESSNESS if possible tragedy, suffering
and sorrow are to be averted.
- The National Safety Council has enlisted the active support
of the President of the United States, every governor, every
traffic official, every state and municipal official, in a nation
wide offort to reduce these casualties for July and, other
summer months.
' ET'S be ALIVE on the FIFTH."
This startling slogan was selected by the Council as
a means of bringing to public realization the need of care,
common senso and courtesy on the highway, in the woods, on
the benches this week-end. As a matter of self-interest and
publio welfare, keep that slogan in mind I
With war and discontent in countries surrounding this
nation of ours, we HAVE plenty to be thankful for; CELE
BRATING is certainly in" order but let's do it RIGHT !
So, observe the Fourth of July in good, old American
fashion, BUT
If yon are going to celebrate with fireworks, BE CAREFUL!
Burns and wounds from firecrackers and other firewords
are dangerous, often fatal I
If you are going swimming, DON'T TAKE CHANCES I
Over-exertion or swimming too soon after meals may bring
tragedy to a happy outing!
If you are goinK camping, BE CAREFUL OF FIRE! Forest
fires are costly in life and property!
If you are on the highway, DRIVE CAREFULLY! The other
fellow is entitled to a bn-ak, so BE COURTEOUS at the
wheel.
If you want to drive, DON'T DRINK; if you must drink,
DON'T DRIVE.
Let's enjoy a glorious and SAFE Fourth of July this year
. and let's" give DEATH a holiday, too! H. G.

MAYBE THE J (J DOB IB WRONG
County Judge writes, and even If
he were Justice of the Peace, I
grown

"All the

articles and I
am sure we have
b e n e f 1 tted by
them.
Old Ideas die
hard, though.
and I find It
hard to accept
your oft repeat
ed state merits
that nothing can
get through the
unbroken skin.
One sum mer
my brother and X, attending a little
country school, caught the Itch. An
old neighbor woman told our mother
how to mix the lard and suipnur.
snd Instructed her to give up a
heaping teaspoonrul of sulphur in
ternally, "to drive the Itch out to
the surface."
When we balked, the old woman
said we could prove the sulphur
comes out through the skin by
shaking our socks over a hot stove
24 hours after taking the dose.
We tried It out. and the pinpoints
of burning sulphur proved the old
lady's theory.
Maybe you're right. I d now.
Anyway the Judge's experiment
was as welt controlled and as scien
tific as the experiments of one
David Z. Macht, M.D., who reported
in the Jour. A. M. A., Feb. 5. 1938.
that all sorts of medicines and poi
sons are absorbed through the skin
If one applies them with Just the
proper turn of the wrist and so on.
My skin Is still available for a show
down on this question. But then.
probably my hide Is tougher than
guinea pig s.
The Judge has me wrong however,
do not deny that sulphur Is se
creted through the skin when large
amounts of sulphur or sulphides are
taken Internally. Many substances
are excreted, In part. In the sweat
for instance Iodine, lead, mercury.
Practically the amount of any drug
or chemical or poison excreted In
the sweat, la Insignificant In any
circumstance, compared with the
amount excreted via the Intestine,
kidneys and lungs. What I do deny
Is that any one has produced any
scientific evidence to Indicate that
any drug. food, chemical, poison or
other substance Is absorbed through
unbroken skin, no matter how It
may be applied.
The sulphur and lard treatment
Is the best treatment for scabies,
the old-fashioned itch, the seven
year itch, or whatever fancy local
name you please to call It. The suc
cess of the treatment depends on
(1) the perfection of the ointment
the powdered sulphur, say two
ounces of It, must be so thoroly
rubbed with the pound of lard that
no particle of sulphur can be seen
or felt with the fingers; (3) the
patient must be scrubbed with hot
soap and water to within an Inch
of his life scrubbed with a brush
to the limit of endurance, then
thoroughly dried, and (3) the oint
ment well rubbed In and an excess
left on the skin wherever the slight
est Indication of the Itch is evl
dent left on all night. Next mora
lng (4) a bath, and a complete
change of clothes and bedclothes and
nighty and everything, for otherwise
reinfection Is almost certain to oc
cur.
The old woman's notion that the
sulphur taken internally would drive
the Itch out to the surface was an
old woman's notion. The Itch never
goes below the surface the itch
mites find the pickings entirely
rat is factory on the surface.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Milk Diet
When a heart disease patient Is
put on milk diet is there any limit
to the quantity of milk he can take?
Is there a special milk diet for heart
disease? A. M. B.
Answer I know of none. The Ka
rell diet, sometimes used In cases
of dropsy from heart disease, is
exclusive diet of skim milk, but
this Is not often used today. A
patient on a milk diet should have
specific instructions from the doctor
as to the quantity of milk to be
taken.

he says about world affairs is always interesting. Here is some
thing of special interest to Americans. .
Interviewed by S. L. A. Marshall for the North American
Newspaper Alliance, and ask.d what would happen in case
of another general war, if the I nited States stayed clear of
it and was not involved in revolution, he replied:
"It may alter the map of North America. But I repeat
what I wrote 15 years ago, and today feel more strongly than
ever in that event, the Tnited States will become the absolute
eccuoniio master of this planet. There is the main chance ahead
of you that Europe's tragedy mav mean America's fortune.
If the United States can avoid the next great war, it will know
more power and prosperity than it has ever known. It will

That is complimentary and reassuring, and should
strengthen the determination of all influential Americans to
