GROWERS DECIDE
ON FIELD WAGES

growers of the MIIton-Freewater-Wl .
la Walla area met here last night and
decided upon a 30-cent-an-hour wag
maximum for field labor. A commit
tee of 16 was appointed to represent
the growers and will meet tonight to
name a delegation to go to Portland'
and oonfer with the state welfare
board In an effort to secure reduc
tion of the present 85-cent-an-hour
wage for women packing plant work- -era.
It la felt this reduction Is only
equitable In view of the Held labor
scale establishment.
First tomatoes were packed her
yesterday. A light pack la expected
during the remainder of the week
with carload lota moving about July
10. The crop yield Is practically the
same as last year, with little loss
from blight, only 10 to 18 per cent
of the crop being; affected.
