FIRST FEDERAL VOTES
4 PER CENT DIVIDEND
A dividend of 4 percent on all
shares for the current six months'
period ending June 30, 1938, was
voted by the board of directors of
the First Federal Savings and Loan
association of Medford at Its regu
lar June meeting, making an unin
terrupted payment by the association
of 4 percent since Its Inception.
In addition to the dividend dis
tribution to investment and saving
members of the association, a sub
stantial amount will be added to the
surplus and reserve accounts from
the earnings of the past six months'
period, B. P. Kyle, secretary of the
association, stated today.
During the last six months the
association has made very satisfac
tory progress In all lines of Its activ
ity, Mr. Kyle said. "The financial
statement as of t June 30 will show
a very healthy Increase In assets. The
association has granted a large num
ber of loans on homes during thtu
period, thereby promoting home own
ership and creating a market for local
labor and materials," he stated.
Soundness of the Investment and
the appeal to the public of the In
surance of savings accounts by the
Federal Savings & Loan Insurance
corporation, an agency of the fed
eral government, were credited by Mr.
Kyle for the Increased number of
Investors.
Officers and directors of the asso
ciation are Fred L. Heath, president;
Wm. H. ""Fluhrer, vice president; R.
F. Kyle, secretary-treasurer; P. M.
Janney, Max Pelroe, B. H. Bauer,
W. O. Rookard and Stephen Q. Nye.
POSTPONE HEARING
IT
Hearing of the complaint charging
the Bishop brothers of Sams Valley
with assault and battery upon
state policeman, has been postponed
until July 12, by Justice of the Peace
W. R. Coleman. It was scheduled for
today.
The complaint was Blgned by State
Policeman Paul A. Williams, who al
leges that while questioning the pair,
one of them struck him In the mouth
with his fist, cutting the lower Up.
Afterwards they Ignored the troop
er's commands to halt, while fleeing
The Incident occurred ten days
ago in the Sams Valley district. The
officer was Investigating the letting
of air out of an auto tire. One of the
Bishop boys volunteered the Informa
tion, he knew nothing about the
piece of mischief. The blow was al
legedly struck when the state po
liceman asked how he knew it had
been done.

closed to all travel effective July V

Premiere of Jean
Parker's New Hit
Now at Craferian
It Is seldom Indeed that a city
the sis of Medford Is fortunate
enough to have the world premiere
showing of a motion picture that
la expected to become one of the
top favorites of the year. But It does
happen and today the Craterlan
theatre opens the first showing, any
where, of "Romance of the Limber
lost, the Gene Stratton-Porter story
starring Jean Parker.
The story of Indiana's swamp folk,
"Romance of the Limberlost," la to
be the Inhabitants of the 95 miles
of swamp land In the southern part
of the state, what "Tobacco Road"
Is to Georgia, or the Bayous are to
New Orleans.
Laurie (Jean Parker) Is a child
of nature, who Uvea in the Limber-
lost with her Aunt Nora, who hates'
(he girl because her mother had
married the man Nora had lovd
Laura tries to defeat her environ
ment by study but gets no encour
agement except from the bound boy
of Corson, drunken, coarse bully,
wealthiest man In the Limberlost,
who desires to marry Laurie.
When Corson agrees to support
Aunt Nora In style for the rest of
her life, the woman forces Laurie
into acceptance of the marriage, only
because she Is afraid of a scandal
about her mother. Into this picture
comes the young lawyer Wayne, and
the two young people fall In love.
When Corson Is killed accidentally,
his bound boy Erie is accused of
the murder. Thereupon Wayne takes
the side of the boy and In a thrilling
Jury trial proves his innocence. And
with justice comes the realization
of the young folks' romance.

THEFT OF GASOLINE
- Eugene Prince, 19, local youth,
charged with theft of a half gallon
of gasoline from a car belonging to
Sam Bateman, was sentenced to 30
days In the county Jail by Justice of
the Peace William R. Coleman yes
terday. The authorities claim -Prince
has been In trouble before. The com
plaint was signed by Clyde Pichtner
of the city police force.
George H. Ferguson of Wenatchee,
Wash., charged with operating a
truck without a PUC license was as
sessed 10 r.ad costs.

Seventeen persons were killed by
lightning today and more than 100
injured as the severest thunder storm
In recent memory raged in several
parts of Poland, ending a heat wave.

SEEKS ROAD CHANGE
The county court was today con
sidering a petition, granting "a road
of necessity" to Hamilton Pox. a res
ident of the Lake Creek district, to
give him an outlet from his place.
There Is a road now to the Pox
place, and it has two gates. Their re
moval la sought to provide a freer
path for trarflc and cattle, and also
eliminate stock breaking down the
fences, and eating growing crops.
Pierce Returns
LA GRANDE, June 29. (tf Rep.
and Mrs. Walter Pierce were home to
day from the 75th congress and
Pierce expressed optimism over pros
pects of obtaining funds to start the
Umatilla dam project. He said he be
lieved the president would accede to
construction.

from his bicycle and fatally injured
by an automobile last night at north
west 37th avenue and Alnsworth
street. His death was the twenty

Robinson, Portland lawyer, became
president today of the Pacific coast
grand lodge of B'Nal B'Rlth, Jewish
organization, and San Francisco was
chosen for the 76th convention next
year. Robinson succeeds Jacob J.
