Scurrying Ilka a scared skunk for
the dressing room, with a wild-eyed
Duda Chick hot on hts heels and
bant on extermination. Terrible Ted
Christy made hla exit from the arm
ory arena last night.
A few moments previously Terrible
Ted had been the principal figure in
one of the mast hair-raising climaxes
ever given a grappling match in this
town, and if he revealed his true
color in that mad dash for the safety
and comfort of the shower room, he
probably didn't care. For he had
Just beaten Dude Chick, world's Jun
ior heavyweight champion.
Yes, Christy beat Chick last night
in the main event of Promoter Mack
Llllard's final armory presentation of
pain and punishment until July 18.
He beat him first, by delivering a
KO punch to Referee Toy Aho and
second, by landing a haymaker to
Chick's chin that flattened the
champ like a thin dime. So, what
did It matter, thought Christy, If
1500 fans did go nuts and demand
his scalp, and Chick did pick up a
chair and pursue him to the confines
of the dressing room. He had beaten
Chick, and that's all that mattered.
The end to a sensational match
came when ChrLsty was standing on
the ring apron outside the ropes and
Chick was doing his best to heave
him back In where he could go to
work. Referee Aho projected himself
In between the pair, trying to break
Chick loose, end that move was fatal
for both the ref and for Chick.
Christy loosed a tremendous clout
that caught Aho square on the but
ton, ahd the little referee topplod
over backwards, out cold. Then, as
Chick was bending tenderly over his
pal. Aho. Christy shot another
straight right that crushed against
the champ's Jaw. and Chick sunk to
the canvas to keep Aho company.
That was all Christy needed; he
flopped on top of the Cowboy. When
' Aho finally staggered to his feet.
Chick was still in dreamland and
Christy was still on top. so there
was nothing else to do but caress
Christy's back. The time was 34
minutes.
Christy swaggered to his feet and
Aho reluctantly raised hts arm. About
that time. Chick came out of hts
coma, and raged into action. With
a roar he brushed Aho aside and
belted Christy on the head. Juat
once, for Terrible Ted was all through
for the evening. He lit for the ropes,
and made himself scarce, with Chick
right on his tall brandishing a chair.
Just before Christy reached the
. dressing-room, Chick heaved the
chair, missing. Thus ended the spec
tacular brawl, the third Chick has
lost in southern Oregon in three
years.
Christy took the first tumble in
33 minutes with a shoulder stand.
after displaying every foul tactic ever
written, and maybe some that haven't
been officially recorded. Chick came
back, two minutea later, to even the
count with a spider-web toehold-
Miss Clara Mortenson, world's wo
man champion, proved she Is not
only a champion, but something of
a super-woman, when she survived
a concerted attack of four other
feminine grapplers in a battle royal,
then went on to take one fall from
Senorita Maria Martines in an old
fashioned hair-pulling festival. The
.battle royal quickly developed Into
a game of "get the champion," with
the four gals doing their best to
take La Mortenson apart. However.
La Mortenson played It smart, spend
ing considerable time outside the
ropea until she saw a chance to
pounce, like a tiger, on one of her
"slaters under the skin."
First to be eliminated was Grace
Moore of Salt Lake City, succumb
lng to a body press. Next out was
Mildred White of Spokane, who re
( celved the same medicine. Lucille
Davla of Texas was the third to
bow in defeat, also via a Mortenson
body press. Coming back for the
one-fall match, the Mortenson and
Martinez girlies went to town for 13
minutes before the champion slip
ped out of a body scissors and pin-,
ned hw opponent with a shoulder
press.
Bobby Chick gave villainous Tony
Morrill an upside-down lariat spin
in the fourth round to end their
opener, after Tony had taken the
first fall in the third round with
brutal punches and a body press.
After being spun 11 times, Morel li
was unable to come back for the
third and deciding fall.
Dick Mahan of Arkansas, a pro
fessional strong-man. displayed feats
of strength. He blw up an inner
tube until it resembled a toy bal
loon, and also survived tne effort, of
four husky men to choke him with
a rope.

CHICAGO. June 28. p) A crow-l
of 4.000 fans cheered last night as
Peter Crlbarl's opponent rallied in
the final round ot an amateur box
ing tournament bout to win by a
knockout.
A half hour later the crowd sat
silent, stunned by an announcement
that Cribarl had died. The 18-yonr
old youth, carried from the ring
to a nearby field house, succumbed
without regaining consciousness.
Ring officials said no hard blows
had been struck in the first two
rounds. In the third Cribarl went
down with a left to the body and
a right to the Jaw.
The youths were boxing in the
novice class of the Chicago park
district tournament.
Grief stricken, Ray Maher. 16, the
victorious boxer, fled from the field

that Curtis Davis was all through

At the time, our reasoning seemed
logical enough. Why, so ran our
thought-process, should Mr. Wrlgley
of Chicago give Mr. Rickey of St.
Louis a cool 185 grand, plus Curt
Davis and two other players, for one
Dizzy Dean, when Davis, according
to the 1937 record book, was a better
pitcher than the talkative Dizzy?
Apparently, there was only one ans
wer. Wrlgley wanted Dean so badly
ho was willing to part with plenty of
potatoes. Including a Curt Davis he
figured would be valueless In the fu
ture, to get him. So, if Wrlgley
though Davts was all washed up,
that was good enough for yours truly.
If the bfg ex-Medford righthander
is washed up. there are plenty of ma
jor league hurlers right now who
would like to boast Curt's record and
be tagged "all through." Saturday,
Curt came through with hts seventh
pitching victory of the season, beat
ing Brooklyn and Navy Bill Posedel,
3 to 1, while allowing only 8 scat

games, and about the only National

the strangest fires In the city's his

thousands of gallons of water were
poured Into the tunnel, which la still
under construction, before a failure
of machinery forced firemen to re
