' Matowchen Land Force
Definitely Blocked.
SHANGHAI, June 29. (Wednesday)
(AP) Major fighting In Japan
drive on Hankow swirled tonight
round the great Yangtze river bar
ricade of sunken junka. mines and
fort at Matowchen, 176 miles down
river from Hankow, but Chinese said
the main barrier still held despite
desperate Japanese assaults and local
gains.
Japanese land forces were reported
definitely blocked In efforts to drive
ahead along the river. A column on
the south bank fought ita way out
of a position In which It was encir
cled by Chinese, a Japanese spokes
man announced, but Chinese re
ported an Invading force danger
ously surrounded on the north bank,
Foreign military authorities said
the fate of the Matowchen barrier,
or boom, depended on the success
of the Japanese land columns try
ing to reach Its ends and short de
fen sea.
The river was rising, making It
easier for Japanese boaU to pass
the barrier once Its defenders have
been driven off.
While Increasing armies on both
Ides fought for tho Matowchen
boom a "dare-to-dle" Chinese aviator
was reported to have sunk a Japan
ese gunboat some 40 miles downriver
by deliberately plunging his bomb-
laden piano on Its deck.

A forestry problem that might be

Chief P, A. Sllcox In Washington
today confronted District Ringer
Homer Hlxon at Union Creek Hlxon
applied for help to Rogue River na
tional forest headquarters here but
Supervisor Karl L. Janouch's office
was ominously silent.
The problem arose two weeks ao
when a big and odertferous skunk
took up Its abode under the ERA

by day and prowl by night, return
ln always to Us home unuer the
house. The odor haa become so
strong the ERA men are kicking.
They can scarcely eat, much Was
sleep. It's like having a skunk In
bed with you, they declare.
The men tried boarding up the
house but the rttunk dug under.
Hlxon thought of trapping the ani
mal but the men said the scheme
wouldn't work. Hlxon heard skunks
could be caught easily by the tall
but none would volunteer for the
Job, not even Hlxon.
Now Hlxon Is frankly aiumped. He's
looking for suctions. If a solution
doesn't appear soon, he'll write , to
Chief SUcox, he declared.
