Mr. and Mrs. M. N. Conley and sons
left Tuesday for Reno, Nevada. Mr.

TARIFF CHANGES 10
SALEM, June 22. (AP) Governor
Charles H. Martin appealed to WPA
Administrator Harry Hopkins today to
aid the state's 82.000 unemployed by
seeking tariff preferences for Oregon
lumber.
The governor. In a ettr to Hop
kins, said that "removal of discrim
inatory British tariffs against Ore
gon lumber would enable the lumber
industry of my state to reemploy
thousands of Jobless loggers and saw
mill workers and to greatly augment
employment In related industries.'
He said that In normal timet 37,-
000 men are employed In the state's
lumber Industry, but now 8,541 are
working full time, 7,350 part time
and 11.109 not at all.
"These figures . . . disclose con
dition of human distress as dire as
that In the dust bowl areas during
the drouth years. The latter was Im
posed by nature. In Oregon the dis
aster la largely man-made."

WHEN GIRL HURT
CENTHALIA, June 22. (AP) Two
young Centrnllans, Vivian Randall,
19, and Arthur Owen, 20, were dead
today as the result of an automobile
accident and suicide last night on a
rural road near here.
The car in which they were riding
skidded In loose gravel, throwing the
girl out. A passing motorist picked
her up and took her to a Chehalis
hospital, leaving young Owen with
the car. The latter, apparently re
mo cse ful over the accident, went to
the nearby farm of Conrad Schueber.
