Early enforcement of a Grange-sponsored
state marketing act to allow a
test of Its constitutionality was
sought In an Oregon Orange conven
tion request yesterday to the state
hoard of agriculture and Oovernor
Charles H. Martin. -
The convention delegation debated
and rejected two resolutions, approv
ed by the transportation committee,
opposing a 70-car train bill now In
congress.
Increased tariff on South Amer
ican canned beef and reduced sugar
Importations were urged to protect
American farm and livestock Inter
ests. Seek Road Funds
Diversion of more state highway
commission funds to counties for use
on farm-to-market roads, rural mall
and public school routes was demand
ed. O rangers at the same time approv
ed a change In laws to give the high
way commission police Jurisdiction In
controlling state highway speed limits
and to provide night lighting, but ab
ruptly rejected a proposal to give the
commission power to set speed limits
or to replace the present "prudent
rate" with more definite regulations.
Resolutions seeking establishment
of minimum prices ior all agricultural
products and urging the proposal be
made a national Issue were rejected.
Another proposal, asking a certified
public accountant's audit of Orange
books for 1936 and 1937, failed to
win committee support and was
promptly killed when It reached the
floor.
L'rae Book Cost Study
An Interim committee to Investi
gate methods of lowering public
textbook costs was favored and the
group urged that the state assume
a larger share In support of educa
tion, that pubnc school teachers take
first aid course, and that each school
be provided with first aid kits.
Stream purification measures, the
Willamette valle? project and uni
form legislation for all western states
relative to truck load weights were
supported. A proposal to establish a
Umatilla county producers' and con
sumers' cooperative market was op
posed Resolutions asked congress to
Issue advance bulletins on dietetics,
pass legislation to prevent spread of
spotted fever ticks, and the legisla
ture to adopt a clearer definition of
forest land In Oregon fire laws and
establish a surplus crop laboratory at
Pendleton.
Slaughter Defeated
Dr. Albert Slaughter. Portland, vet
eran member of the executive com
mittee ,was defeated In a run-off
election by W. A. Johnson, Grants
Pass. Also elected In run-off voting
were Roscoe Robertson, wheeler
county, steward; Henry Ouatafson, as
sistant steward; L'Rena Slack, Klam
ath county, flora, and Dorothy Per
kins, lady assistant steward.
In a relatively slow session this
morning the convention resolved to
employ a full-time deputy tq cover
the state In the Interests of a Grange-
supported cooperative movement for
the purchase of farm supplies. '
The special deputy will work un
der the Joint direction of the state
Orange and the wholesale board and
will contact supply units and bring
the movement before all Granges.
Mrs. Fanny McCall asked to be re
leased from the chairmanship of tho
state Juvenile committee and was re-

placed by Mrs. LUena Slack of Bon
anza. Drill team contests and a trip
through Klamath county farm dis
tricts were on the Orange program
for this afternoon, and Orange ritual,
with a large class taking the sixth,
or state, degree obligation, la sched
uled for tonight.
Business sessions will resume to
morrow morning.

tomorrow for the purpose of giving
free Instruction to all local nlmrodi
in the art of scientific angling tech
nique With his wife, who is an expert
caster and angler in her own right,
he will make his demonstration on
the courthouse lawn between 4 and
7 p. m., and all fishermen, both
male and female, are cordially In
vited to take advantage of the op
portunity to learn the correct man
ner In which to cast. both fly and
bait. He appears under auspices of
the Southern Oregon Sportsmen's
club. '
Haslett, known as the "Gypsy
Angler." travels the three Pacific
coast states as a good -will repre
sentative of the leading tackle man
ufacturers of the country, display
ing the latest In rods, reels, lines
and files, and the correct sports
and rain wear for sportsmen. How
ever, absolutely nothing is offered
for sale during the demonstration,
and free casting Instruction is of
fered any Interested angler. Fisher
men may bring their own gear, or
may use any of the correct tackle
on display.

Discussions revealed that the fruit
workers' earnings ranged from $150
to $325 for an average of ten weeks' ,
of employment, hours averaging ten
a day, Mr. Long's statement said.
While no effort was made to or
ganize the fruit workers last night,
they were Invited to affiliate with
the central labor council. It was
pointed out, Mr. Long said, that the
council la composed of local residents
Interested In the progress and wel
fare of the community.
