Interior Department Damp
ens Spirit Of Would-Be
Colonists Wrong Idea
Held On Island Fertility
By Jnllui C. Kdelsteln
(United Preaa Staff Correspondent)
WASHINGTON (UP) Secretary o(
tho Interior Harold Ickea would Juat
aa soon have everyone know tnat
Canton and Endrbury, the two Pa'
- clflc lalanda over which th Amer
ican flag recently waa raised,
aomethlng lesa than a "Bout
paradise."
Secretary Ickea would like to ad'
viae hie fellow countrymen further
that selling the farm In Kansas to
buy passage to Canton and Enaer
bury In hope of settling there per
mauently la not at this point a wise
course of action.
The secretary and other offlclala
of the department or tne interior
have been deluged with letters from
' substantial citizens who would like
to get "away from it all." Canton
nd Enderbury, they think, would
be an Ideal place for escape.
Owier letters, coming mostly from
the middle west, Indicate that the
pioneering spirit still Uvea In the
American soil. Hardy mldwestern
larmera are ready, at a word from
Ickea, to pack up the plow, sell the
family livestock, and strike west for
new and more fertile fields In the
middle of the Paclflo ocean.
No Pioneers Wanted
The office of Dr. Ernest Oruen-
lnu. dlrootor of the division of .ter
ritories, lias been forced regretfully
to Inform the hordes who would
cheerfully migrate to the new Amer
lean Islands that applications for
pioneers ara not being received for
the time being,
canton and Enderbury, offlclala
explain, are not exactly of the Soutn
a garden type bursting with lush
vegetation . ana trilling wun eoua.
l'here are no blrda of paradise fllt
tlme from tree to tree. There la no
immediate possibility at planting
waving fields of grain.
The letters come In, soma written
n sheets of brown wrapping paper,
and others flourishingly Inscribed
on rich stationery. How la the beat
way to get to Canton and isnaer
miry? Where 1 the nearest register
of deeds where one can file a olalm?
Tha answer Is "No." There are no
regular boat schedules to either Can
ton or Enderbury, and none of the
larger shipping line hi
route under consideration.
Harbors for Uowboats
Neither of the two Islands haa a
harbor suitable for anything bigger
than a medlum-ileed rowboat. can
ton island- la a ring of scrub land
nd coral, Inclosing a steaming la
goon suitable for seaplane landings
but not very mucn run to awim m,
according to reports on file here.
There ara a few scraggly clumps
of pslms, kou, and nonl trees on one
aide of the Island, but tha vegeta
tion scarcely yields sufficient shade
to ahelter romance or to keep off
sunstroke, tha official reports Indl
oate. Enderbury laland Is even mora un
promising from an agricultural point
of view. There ara a lew unhappy
herbs and vines, but tha only lusty
Ufa on the Island la to be found
In the rata which arrived with the
early Polynesians who flrat landed
at Enderbury some centurlea ago,
and among tha mora adapted forms
of eilatence. The Polynesia la neglect
ad to stay.
suitable tor Planes
Enderbury, too, haa a lagoon, but
It la a low brackish pond unsuitable
for seaplane use. It affords an ex
cellent runway for a land plane,
however.
Tha United States haa colonised
the islands, offlclala point out, with
the atrong. sturdy youths of the
. Kamehemeha school of Honolulu.
These stalwart Hawallana oan with
atand the blistering aun, tha terrific
heat of these sub-equatorial Islands,
but It la doubtful whether the aver
age middle westerner could wield a
hoe In anything approximating com
fort there.
Canton and Enderbury, It la point
ed out. ara barren mounda of sand
and coral which may make conven
ient landing depots for trana-Pa-cltlo
planes on their way to New
Zealand. But the Islands would never
run much competition to Tahiti or
the Riviera as a watering spot for
lovers of art and beauty.
Secretary lokes hopea that hla cor
respondents will understand why he
Isn't vary co-operative with their en
thusiastic offers to help In .the good
work of colonisation.
