but you'd never have known It yes
terday afternoon at the high school
park.
Not even a couple of Crater hoiae
runa and a triple play helped matters
to any great extent aa the Callfor
nlana, displaying no basement cnar
acterlstlcs. whatsoever, landed on
three Medford hurlera for 30 bit and
wound up by driving across four
tallica In the tenth Inning to break
an 8 to 8 deadlock and win. 12 to 8,
in a wild-eyed, hysterical encounter.
It was Yreka's first victory and Mad-
ford's Initial setback In four starts.
From the sublime to the ridiculous
went Medford heretofore fine In
field, coming apart at the seams to
the extent ot six errors which, added
to three boots turned In by Catcher
Cliff McLean, of all guys,' gave the
locals the dismal total of nine defen
sive mishaps. Those boots hurt, al
right, but the Yreka probably
couldn't have been atopped with per
fect fielding plus a "Bob Feller" ot ao.
They had their hitting pants on and
Ray Erlckson, Bill Rathke and Ed
George, Crater pitchers who paraded
to the mound, couldn't do anything
about It.
McLean Opens Bitting
Medford was behind, 6 to 8, In the
last half of the ninth Inning wher
Cliff McLean came up with two
aboard and blasted a home run into
rlght-centerfleld, knotting the count.
That blow more than made up for a
wild heave and a dropped throw the
"Chief" had made previously, and
things were all even again. But, not
for long.
In the first of the tenth the Call
fornlana hopped all over George, last
Crater pitcher to aee action, combing
him for five slnglea and a, double
good for a quartet of runa and the
ball gam. McLean dropped from his
"hero" position, somewhat, when,
after Foster singled to open the In
ning, ha threw wild down to first
trying to nip the Yrokan off the bag,
Foster ending up at third base. Hal
terman promptly singled to right
scoring Foster with the winning run
Bennett singled, and after Shelton
and Phil Brazil went out, Short,
plnoh-hlttlng for Bland, doubled to
left and Coatney and Tony Brazil hit
singles, and that was that.
In Medford'a half of the tenth.
Ager led off with double to left,
but White, George and Sakralda went
out to kill the rally.
The Crater la 1 1 led three times In
the first frame on Sakralda walk,
Rlckert'a Infield acratchor down the
third baee lino, an error and Hooster
Hoffard double to right. '
Brlrksoifc Relieved
Ray Erlckson, Medford's starting
cliucker, kept the Callfornlana away
from the plate until the fourth. In
that frame. P. Brazil alngled, was aac
rlftced to second, and when Agar and
Lewi committed errors and Colt and
Clary rapped clean singles for a total
of two runs, BUI Rathke relieved
Erlckson In the box. Rathke escaped
unscathed that Inning and the fifth,
but waa ahelled hard In the sixth
when Yreka scored twice to take the
lead.
Four atralght singles to Coatney, T.
Brazil, Colt and Clary, added . to
errors by Brown and McLean, gave
Yreka the lead, and George took over
the Medford mound duties In tho
seventh.
Ahead 4 to 8, Yreka Increased the
lead to 8 to 3 In George's first Inning
Shelton doubled and scored on Kick-
art' error. Afe.-r Bland walked.
Coatney tripled to left-center scoring
P. Brazil and Bland, and crossed the
piste, himself, while Rlckert waa
throwing out T. Brazil.
Bennett Effective
Prom the first untu the eighth the
Craters were atopped In their tracks
by Qordon Bennett, Yreka righthand
er who didn't appear to have much
mora than prajer. In the eighth,
Medford bats finally started to talk,
with Hoffard belting a terrific home
run Into centerfield to open the In
nlng. When McLean smashed
double to left, Bennett aald goodbye
and Foster replaced him. He got rid
of Calvert and Ager, but Tommy
White, batting for Brown, poked
single over short and McLean romped
noma. That waa three runa In and
made the scoro 8 to 8.
Then came Medford's sensational
ninth -Inning rally which tied th
score but proved futile In th long
run. Sakralda, flrat up, grounded
out. Rlckert got his third scratch
hit of the game down the third base
line. Lewla popped out to the pitch
er, but Hoffard got Ufa when Tony
Brazil. Yreka second baseman, drop
ped bis high fly. McLean whalnd a
line drive between right and center
field and completed the circuit be
hind Rlckert and Hoffard. tying the
score at 8-all. Then, the disastrous
tenth, and the Craters' first defeat In
six games, counting two exhibition
affaire.
Lowell Brown was responsible for
Medford' triple play, first of the
Southern Oregon leagu season. It
cam In th third Inning after Hal
terman reached flrat on Brown's error
and went to second on Bennett's
single. Shelton hit loopur down
the first base line which Brown snag
ged, after which he stepped on first
doubling Bennett off the bag and
threw to Dick Lewis on second before
Halterman 'could get back.
