AT UNION CREEK
Jesse P. DeWltt, Union Creek dis
trict ranger of the Rogue River Na
tional forest has applied for retire
ment because of 111 health after 31
years with the United States forest
service, headquarters announced yea-
terday. He will go on leave of absence
Tuesday pending action In Washing
ton, D. C, on his retirement applica
tion. It the application Is sanctioned.
Mr. DeWltt will be succeeded by Ho
mer J. Hlxon of Trout Lake. Wash.,
who will be promoted from assistant
district ranger of the Columbia na
tional forest, headquarters said,
Mr. DeWltt entered the United
States forest service as a guard on
the Siskiyou national forest in June.
1907. He became a ranger In 1916 and
wsa In charge of the dalle and Page
Creek district of the Siskiyou na
tional forest before being transferred
to the Rogue River national forest In
March. 1930. He has been In charge
of the Union Cfeefc district since
then.
Mr. DeWltt has been rated as one
of the most conscientious and effi
cient district rangers in the forest
service. Always courteous and willing
to serve the publlo capably and sin
cerely, he has upheld the traditions
for which the forest service has be
come world-famous.
Mrs, DeWltt is also a veteran oi wie
United States forest service. 8he en
tered the service aa a clerk In the
same year as Mr. DeWltt, 1907. She
served In New Mexico and Montana
before entering a 16-year employment
with the Rogue River national for
est. She terminated her service In

spoke on "Repeal" In a clear, forceful
manner. Phoebe Swem again enter
tained with her accordion, playing
"L'Espagnola" and "La Ooiondrlna,"
which were enjoyed by all.
The Judge for the evening contest

Oustln and D. McKenele.
Mr. Darnlelle presided at the con
tests and presented the speakers. He
thanked Rev. Knotts and Dr. Bray
and their church groups for the use

The newly-formed Association of
Southern Oregon Chambers of Com
merce will meet with the state high
way commission In the Hotel Med
ford next Saturday evening. It was
announced yesterday by A. H. Ban
well, manager of the Jackson County
Chamber of Commerce.
The meeting will discuss highway
development and Improvement, in
cluding completion of the new paclflo
highway over the Siskiyou mountain
and elimination of curves in the same
highway between Grants Pass and
Boseburg.
The association,- organized at a
meeting here last Wednesday, wtll
meet for dinner at 7 o'olock and the
highway commissioners will Join the
group a little later, Mr. Banwell said.
The chambers of commerce of Med
ford, Ashland, Cirants Pass,' Boseburg
and Yreka. Calif., will be represented
