An Influx of caterpillars has ap
peared on trees of this city and
vicinity. County Horticulturist A. B
Cordy reported today. Cordy does
not think the pefts will prove a
serious menace, due to the late sea

The caterpillars, so far, have, ap
peared only on elm trees, stripping

Plney Woods school, of Plney Woods.

The T!ney Woods school la one of
the fine old negro Institutions of
learning In the South. The music
organization of the school has made
twa appearances In the local church
the pnst two years, and each time
the building was filled.
The program Sunday night will
consist of spirituals, plantation mel
odies and dialect readings. All are
welcome to attend. There will be
no admission charge, but a free-will
offering will be received and given
to the achool to further their work
of educations for members of the
negro race.

against his vice-president, Claude M.
Bnker of San Francisco.
Incomplete returns from 58 local
unions gave Bnker 12.693 and How
ard 7504.
Union members admitted freely
that the election brought to a cli
max internal strife between two fac
tions. One favored American Federa
tion of Labor policies and the other
was for the committee, for Industrial
organization, headed by John L.
Lewis. ,
The ITU Is affiliated with the AFL,
and Howard, while president of the
printers, became secretary of the
CIO. He had criticized frequently
AFL President William Green's policies.

Skeeter, the distinguished French
poodle participating in the badger
fight at the recent catfish derby held
at Emigrant dam. Skeeter has been
a visitor on the Applegate for some
time, having come here from Mon
tana with his mistress, Mrs. B. R.
("Billy") Motley, who Is a guest of
her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Rip
pey. Skeeter hss made three trips
here from the neighboring state, and
considers a tiff with a badger only
good gymnastics In his busy life. He
prefers no 111 feelings among his
animal friends., and was delighted to
have the public demonstration
termed a draw. Mrs, Motley received
a prize at the derby for being a vis
itor from the greatest distance.
Edward Kubli Is convalescing at
his home from bronchial pneumonia
which developed during & flu attack
over a week ago.
Mtss Lulu Metzger, who has taught
the Little Applegate school for the
last ewo years, has accepted a posi
tion as primary teacher in the Sams
Valley school, where she also will
supervise music In the high school.
Miss Metzger will attend the summer
session at the Southern Oregon Nor
mal school next month. Among oth
ers from here wVio plan to attend are
Mrs. Ina Purcel and Mrs. George
Brown lee.
Mrs. Glenn Saltmash Is recovering
from a hand Injury received when
her thumb was caught In a clothes
wringer. Five stitches were necessary
to replace the torn flesh.
Mr. and Mrs. Louis Straube motored
to Crater Lake Sunday, returning by
Klamath Falls.
Mrs. W. Dunklo has returned to
Steamboat after making a visit to
Willamette valley.
Miss Ellen Wall of the Ruch-
Sterllng 4-H club was elected a dele
gate to the 4-H club summer school
at Corvallls when the cooking and
sewing clubs held achievement day
Tuesday at Ruch. Many fine exhib
its were displayed, and the young
workers enjoyed club songs and yells
during the evening. Miss Alleen In-
low, upper grade teacher, who will
leave to teach at Gold Hill next
term, was presented with a gift In
appreciation of her services.
Mrs. Elsie Reynolds of Ruch was
honor guest at an afternoon meeting
of community women hald at the
home of Mrs. Rolland Smith. Wed
nesday.
Carl Herrlott has returned to his
home here after several months em
ployment In South America.
The Rev. and Mrs. Paul James of
Seattle are spending a few weeks
camping on lower Applegate, where
Rev, James, o former resident of
Applegate, la doing assessment work
on his mine. The James are accom
panied by their daughter-in-law.
W. F. Bushnell of the First Na
tional bank of Portland, accompanied
by Henry Enders, Ashland banker,
was on the Applegate this week
looking over real estate holdings of
the bank.
Installation of officers Is sched
uled for the final meeting of the
Applegate extension unit to be held
at the club room Wednesday after

Eddie and Richard Hall of Little
Applegate went to Squaw lake Sunday
and were confronted with a bear In
one of the deep canyons there. It
seems that neither the bear nor the
boys were much frightened, although
whpn the latter started throwing
rocks the friend of the woods took
off for quieter areas. ;
Although defeated by two runs In
a return baseball game with Jackson
ville school a few days ago, the Ruch-
Sterllng school played an excellent
game, the only one throughout the i
spring in which they were not victo
rious. The score was 4-2.
Mrs. Vincent Magettl of Sacramen
to was a guest Thursday of Mtss Kate
Bueckley. ' Mrs. Magettl, who was
accompanied by her husband, was
en route to Nevada on a business
trip.

H. A. Morgan also told the com
mittee that Instead of forming a
coalition and conspiracy" against
Chairman Morgan as the latter
charged, the two directors had sought
to prevent a one-man rule.
The former chairman, H. A. Mor
gan asserted, resented the actions of
the other directors because "he was
disabled from dictating all action
and from exercising a veto power."
Bureaucracy Denied
On one occasion, the witness said, i

on major policies while he was away
on a week's-long vacation.
The witness denied Arthur Mor- j
gan's charge that the land-grant-
colleges with which the TVA has
co-operated in its agricultural pro
gram constitute a "powerful political
bureaucracy."
"I do not feel It necessary to
defend such splendid public insti
tutions as Ohio State university. Cor
nell. Iowa State, Purdue, Alabama
Polytechnic Institute, and the Uni
versity of Kentucky, and the other
land-grant colleges of the nation."
Morgan, former president of the
University of Tennessee, added: "His
(Dr. A. E. Morgan's) statement thus
condemning such Institutions must
come as a distinct shock to those
who have known them and have
been touched by their influence
throughout the country."
