PHOENIX COAL MINE
GIVEN GOOD BATING
BY STATE GEOLOGIST
GRANTS PASS. May 30, AP)
The L. L. Davis cool mint, near
Phoenix, Jackson county, "showi a
good grade of sub-bituminous ooaJ,
J, E. Morrison reported hare today
after a visit to the operations.
The state mining department
geologist said that the tunnel now
extends 700 feet, the last 100 being
recent work. Morrison said that the
strata In placca Is 12 feet thick.
fncreaslng Importance Is being at
tached to this low grade coal, Mor
rison said, because the United States
buroau of mines Is conducting ex
perimental demonstrations on slmllsr
Coos bay coal showing Its vslue In
modern stokers.
Until recent years, the sub-bltu-mlnous
coal taken out broke up very
much and only the larger pieces were
suitable for use. Modern stokers can
utilize the entire output.
Morrison reported that Jits men
were working on the Davis mine. He
estimated their output yesterday, al
though activities were directed al.
most entirely to development, st ap.
proximately seven tons. ,
