Vote on the Record.
To the Editor: I would like to
point out one factor In this Demo
cratic primary which has been more
or less stressed, but so far ai I know,
never set forth alone. That factor
la the RECORD.
In Governor Martin we have a can
didate whose record from youth Is an
open book. Forty-five years of dis
tinguished and honored service In the
army, four years In congress and four
years as governor. So does It matter
whether he has differed with Madam
Perkins and the National Labor Re
lations Board f s
What we want Is a governor who
has a known record of honesty, In
tegrity, ability and unwavering devo
tion to hla duty. What can his op
ponents show In comparison?

To the Editor:
The most vital Issue of the state
campaign seems to be whether Frank
lin D. said to Charley Iron Pants "We
make a good pair.'"
So I move that the election, be
postponed till we find out for sure
and whether he meant a pair of
kings or a pair of deuces.

On Writing In
To the Editor:
Will you please print the attached
article which appeared In the Ash
land Tidings of May 18? Thank you
H. S. DEUEL.
In the enthusiasm of last-minute
political battles many things happen
which are not reasonable, orthodox,
or even fair.
In the current battle between
Governor Martin and Henry L. Hess,
for the Democratic gubernatorial
nomination, the former apparently
carrying the disapproval of leading
Washington administration leaders
and the latter apparently carrying
the banner and approval of the same
certain Washington administration
leaders, such a situation has de
veloped. The extreme Martln-for-Governor
enthusiasts are running wild, with
the very unorthodox, meaningless
and unnecessary appeal that Repub
licans write In the name of Governor
Martin on the Republican ticket for
governor.
In the first place voters must- re
member that Oregon has two politi
cal parties. Democratic and Republl
can, and that In the course of events
Governor Martin affiliated with the
Democratic party and is now seeking
renomlnatlon on the Democratic
ticket. An lnter-party squabble has
developed, which must and has to
be settled by the Democrats.
It It true that Republicans can
wrltft In the name of Governor Mar
tin on the Republican ticket as
their choice for the Republican
nominee for governor, which the
Martln-for-governor enthusiasts are
asking Republicans to do, but Re
publicans must remember that on
the Republican ticket there are ex
cellent candidates for the Republi
can gubernatorial nomination and
that their writing In the name of
Governor Martin on the Republican
ticket Is about as foolish and use
less an act as on could conceive,
for such votes cannot and are not
counted In the Democratic contest
and are absolutely useless unless
Governor Martin should receive more
votes on the Republican ticket than
any of the many regular Republican
candidates for (his nomination.
Can you possibly conceive of Gov
ernor Martin's name being written
In on the Republican ticket more
times than that of Arthur Sprague,
for Instance, regular Republican can
didate, and apparently the leading
candidate for the Republican guber
natorial nomination?
Of course you cannot conceive of
such an outcome, so why waste your
vote in the primary, Republican
voters!
Do not be misled by this propa
ganda. Republican voters, and there
by lose the effectiveness of your
franchise right to choose your party
nominee. Vote for your choice among
the regular Republican candidates
for the primary nomination for gov
ernor. This applies also to Democrats
In exercising their franchise to se
lect their own party nominee.
Then this fall, Mr. and Mrs. Re
publican, when you have a right
to vote, with the knowledge that
your vote will actually count, for
any gubernatorial candidate, whether
Democratic or Republican, with the
chance of having your vote aotually
amount to something, vote for either
Democrat or Republican nominee,
as your conscience dictates.
The Dally Tidings does not hesi
tate one moment to suggest and
advise, as it did In this column
Tuesday, that Democrats should by
all means, support Governor Martin
for the Democratic nomination for
governor, in order to defeat the ef
fort of Washington political leaden
to control and dictate Oregon gov
ernment and politics.

My dear Senator Hess:
