HARTFORD. Conn. (UP) The
oldest governor in the United States,
Gov. Wilbur L. Cross, who recently
observed his seventy-sixth birthday
anniversary, believes Industry would
derive Its greatest benefits by retain
ing employes over 40 years.
"Connecticut." he said, "still holds
the view that there are places for
alert and able-bodied men and wom
en far beyond the age of 40. This
Is a message which . as governor of
Connecticut I wish to broadcast to
all parts of these United States.
King Solomon, he saia, - "a wise
man of the east who ruled over
Israel for 60 years, leading a happy
life for the most time, saith that
'there is nothing new under the sun.'
Certainly there is nothing new in
the aspersions sometimes oast upon
middle and old age. Officers of the
army and navy and college professors
in some Institutions must retire at
certain fixed ages. Judges of the
supreme court of the United States
have been encouraged by congress to
lay aside their robes of office at the
age of 70 on the assurance that they
shall receive their full salaries as
long as they may live.
Age No Gauge
"It has been said that In some
countries citizens have been deprived,
by law or custom, of their civil rights
on their arrival at the age of 60 and
that In others they have been thrown
from bridges into fast flowing streams
to sink or swim as the case might be.
"The fact, of course, is that age
cannot be measured by years. Into
the question of age enter many bio
logical factors. One man may be old
at 40. Another man may he young
at 70. Gladstone, who was called in
his time the Grand Old Man, had
to the last the vigor a ad mental urge
of a young man. After serving in
parliament for 60 years -he again be
came prime minister end ruled the
British empire. He was then 83.
What is true for those who climb
the heights Is also true for all In
the humblest walks of life.
"It must, however, bo conceded
that men young In years may exert a
physical force denied to their elders.
It Is dangerous, for example, for a
man much above 50 to try a running
Jump over a rail fence four or five
feet high. Nor Is a prize fighter well
on in the 40s likely to win a cham
pionship. But rail Jumpers and prize
fighters are not necessary to the
success of manufacturing industry.
Success Is dependent upon faithful
workers, competent to do the task
assigned to them In a large corpo
rate body under the direction of. the
ablest executives available."

The older and experienced workers,
the governor said, "build the ma
chines, they set up the machines,
they run the machines, they super
vise the work, and they see to It
that the output la kept up to the
standard. It is the business of many
of them to catch defective work early

many paths along which an indus
trial corporation may go Into the red,
but there is no quicker and surer
path than by the lack of skilled
supervision over the successive stages
of production."
He urged that young men prepar
ing for an Industrial career "should
avail themselves of the opportunities
that He all around them.
'There Is no reason why they
should not become skilled workmen
early in their 30s and so join that
large group of older men and women
from whom they may learn the
practical details of their trade. The
Ideal Industrial corporation Is one
in which the young and the old work
side by side. The young learn frojn
the experience of their elders, who
in turn are inspired by the enthu
siasm and the new Ideas of their
young associates.

FLYING LUIS NIECE
OF ACE RJCKENBACKER
COLUMBUS, Ohio. (UP) Marian
Pflaum, 18-year-old niece of Eddie
Rlckenbacker, famous World war ace,
has taken the step which may bring
aviation renown to another genera
tion of that famous family.
Marian lives at the Rlckenbacker
homestead here which Eddie left to
enter the World war and to which
he returned nearly 20 years ago to
be acclaimed as America's foremost
air hero. She lives with her mother.
Mrs. Mary A. Pflaum. a sister of
Rlckenbacker. They are the only
members of the family residing here
Marian began her flying lessons
four months ago. Currently she Is a
member of the Ohio State University
Plying club, the National Intcr-Col-
leglato Plying club and the National
Aeronautic association.
A freshman at the university, she
expects to do her first solo flight
shortly.
Her parent has no qualms about
the flying instructions, since, as
Marian puts it. "Uncle Eddie got
them over that.
Rlckenbacker encourages her fly
ing ambitions.

10 MILLIONS LOST
10 GOVERNMENT BY
WASHINGTON, May 12.0PV The
government has lost about $2,000,000
as a result of taking over more than
80.000 homes under Its emergency
home loan progrnm, John P. Fancy,
chairman of the Home Loan bank
board, told a senate sub-committee
today.
Pahey said that most government
loans wero made on homes on which
mortgage payments and taxes wore
delinquent "two and three years."
The 92,000.000 loss, he said, in
cluded interest, as well as back pay
ments, taxes and foreclosure costs.
There were 70.000 foreclosures and
12,000 homes were surrendered vol
untarily. Pahey estimated that 250,000 Home
Owners Loan corporation borrowers
had been delinquent at times but said
most of these were repaying the de
linquencies along with regular mort
gage payments.
Pahey said there had been about
1,100.000 homes financed, at an aver
age of (3,000.

Benton Mine Hesumes.
GRANTS PASS, May 12. P) The
Benton mine, shut down nearly a
month, has resumed work with 22
men employed in northern Josephine
county. Ronds from Olendale be
came Impassable December 15 and the
cyanide mill ran out of fuel April
18. The Benton is one of the most
modern quarts operations in southern
Oregon.

AGREES TO PEACE PLAN

grocery clerks' union, accepting pro
posals growing out of three months
of negotiation, quieted threats today
of a atrlke in Portland food stores.
The agreement, retroactive to May

hour week, Sunday closing, closing at
11 p.m. on week-days, slight pay
