PSYCHOLOGY EDGE
OVER JOE. LOUIS
German Challenger Arrives

By Jack Cuddy
United Pecbs Staff Correspondent
NEW YORK, May 10. (UP) Max
fichmellng says he has a great psy
chological advantage over champion
Joe Louis.
The beetle-browed Gorman chal
lenger admitted as much today when 1
he arrived on the Bremen for his at- I
tempt to recapture the world heavy- ;
weight title from Louis on June 32. I
"For two years people have been ;
asking Louis to explain what happen
ed to him In our first fighfc when I
knocked him out,M Maxle told the
largo brigade of reporters and pho
tographers who met him at quaran
tine after completing his 19th west
ward passage,
Dcfontlst Complex
Those persistent questions and Joe's
attempts to answer them oan't have
done him any good, they must have
built up a bad situation In his mind
what you call a defeatist complox."
The brown bomber may not actually
fear Maxle physically, but Louis must
regard this return match as a hope
less task, Schmellng said.
Maxle emphasized that this attitude
would weaken Louis' attack In the
enrly rounds and probably cause the
negro to be knocked out sooner than
the 12th, when Joe was belted out on
June 10, 1030.
The boxing writers thought Max la's
flight Into psychology wo a bit fan
ciful, but they recalled that his Stat
ue of Liberty remarks In '30 were al
most as far-fetched.
Feels line
But what about Schmellng'a being
two years older than In '30? What
about the percentage against Maxle
recapturing the heavyweight crown, a
feat that no man ever accomplished?
And what about the betting that now
tfavors Louis at 7-8?
The dark-haired husky In the double-breasted
gray suit grinned ami
ably. He said, "Yah, X am 33 now, two
years older. But a man is as old as he
feels, and I feel fine. Many fighters,
like Fltzsimmons, did not reach their
peaks until older than I, I'm In good
shape for this bout after three tune
up fights In five months. The last
time I met Lou la, I hadn't had a fight
In a year.
"I don't think. Louis has Improved
much. I saw him In the Farr fight
and he fought the same way as
against me. Nobody ever won bock
the heavyweight title, but nobody
ever knocked out Louis before I did.
I'm not superstitious. If Louis Is the
betting favorite, that's fine. Remem
ber he was the eight or nlne-to-one
favorite In our first fight."

KENASTON'S FOUL
Bgt. Bob Kenaston of Oold H1U lost
his first grappling bout In three
starts at the Medford armory last
night when the Black Secret, hooded
meanls, was awarded the match on
a foul after 88 minutes of milting.
Referee Earl Yoakley handed the
stiff penalty to Kenaston when the
local pride and joy, after clamping
bis devastating Oold Hill crab bold
on the Secret, failed to break Imme
diately after receiving the ref's pat
on the back. Kenaston, lred because
of the masked villain's repeated dirty
tactics, gave one extra Jerk on the
Secret's neck for good measure, and
that move cost him the match Yoak
ley waived Kenaston to his corner
and raised the Secret's limp arm off
the canvas for the verdict.
Previous to that climax to a rough
and tough match, the Black Secret
had obtained a tumble In 31 minutes
with a back-breaker, after fouling
Kenaston from pillar to post. The de
cision wss an unpopular one with
the smallest crowd In months, and
Kenaston remained In the ring for
10 minutes arguing his point But,
all to no avail as Referee Yoakley
stood pat.
Bobby Chick and Red Lyons bat
tled to a six-round draw In the mid
dle event, with neither grappler able
to obtain a fall. Pour times Chick,
ex-llght heavyweight champion, hoist
ed Lyons to his shoulders and started
the old lariat spin, but each time the
Joplln Qhost managed to save him
self by clutching wildly for the ropes.
Chick scored repeatedly with an arm
breaker and a hammerlock but just
wasn't strong enough to get Lyons In
to proper position for the airplane
spin.
Tony Garibaldi of Italy, a newcom
er to Medford, made his debut in nice
fashion by whipping Fritz Hansen,
villainous Swede, two out of three
falls In the opening event. After Han
sen took the first tumble In the sec
ond heat with a Boston crab, Gari
baldi came back to garner the equal
tzer In the third round with a body
slam, and win the match In the
fourth with a surfboard. Hansen dis
played his usual brand of dirt, and
It was not until the third round that
Tony started to fight back with the
same business. When he did, Hansen
folded.
Interested spectators at the match
es were Coach Lester Wilson and his
Prospect high school varsity basket
ball squad. They were guests of Pro
moter Mack Llllard.
The lmpressarlo also announced
that Floyd Brltt, brother of former
Junior Hoavywelght champion Alvln
Brltt, woud appear on next Monday
night's card against an opponent yet
to be named.

Catfish Derby
Show to Go
Oatflshermen and non -cat fishermen
today began counting the days to
Sunday when the second annual na
tional catfish derby will be held at
Emigrant lake near Ashland.
The fishermen were assembling
their special catfish paraphernalia
and sharpening their wits for the
year's big angling competition and
Its numerous prizes and champion
ship awards. Nou-catflshermen. were
making plans to attend the major
sports event not only to witness the
contest but also to enjoy and take
part In the program of entertainment
to be presented during the two-hour
competition.
While the fishermen angle for the
championship crown and numerous
prizes, special entertainment and con
ests will be held for the spectators.
Catfish derby association officers
ran Into a double barrier today. First,
George A. Hunt, chairman of the en- !
tertalnment program, became til and
was forced to withdraw from active
participation. Despite hie Illness, the 1
show must go on, Mr. Hunt said.

Hits Snag;
On, Perl Says
this old trouper, lmpressarlo and
cinema tycoon.
The derby association executive
committee had Just begun to recover
from the loss of Mr. Hunt's services
when It heard rumblings that hu
mane society workers were contem
plating the procurement of an In
junction to restrain the association
from holding the badger ftght that
had been planned as part of the after
noon's entertainment. Such a fight
la not humane, the be-klnd-to-anl-mal
advocates were quoted as saying,
as Invariably either the badger or the
dog Is torn to shreds.
"The show will go on as planned,
despite these obstacles." declared
President Frank Perl. "There will be
no turning back now. Mr. Hunt had
everything arranged before he be
came sick and a successor will be
appointed to carry out his plans.
"As for the obstructionists who are
trying to stop the badger fight,
phooeyl' exclaimed President Perl.
"Let them get all the Injunctions
they want and the show will go on
as planned. These badgers and bad
ger-fighting dogs enjoy the scrap and
sue r I y, not even humane society fol
lowers would want to deprive ani
mals of what little enjoyment they
can get out of life.
"So everything will go on as an
nounced and we want everyone to
come out and have a good time.
Everything is free and there Is plenty
of room at the lake for a big crowd
Many are planning to spend the day
there on a ptcnlc-outlng and nothing
could be more enjoyable. Anything
that will get people out Into the
healthful sunshine and beautiful
surroundings ought to be encouraged."
So the show will go on. The big
event starts at 1:46 p. m. with the
crowning of the catfish derby queen.
At 3 o'clock the fishing contest will
get underway. During the two hours
of angling competition the program of
entertainment will be presented.
