ANGLERS GET 15
The long-awaited run of Chinook
aalmon In Rogue river ha started.
According to word received from
Rainbow Gibson. 15 big fellows were
landed at Savage Rapids dam yes
terday. In Ideal water, and fishing
should be good for the next two
months.
Gibson sent the following telegram
to the Mail Tribune:' "Come and
get them! At last the big salmon
runs have started to show up In the
Rogue river almost a month later
than usual. Twenty salmon hooked
and 15 landed yesterday at Savage
Rapids dam. Fishing will be good for
the next two months."
Among Med ford anglers landing
salmon were Or. and Mrs. Jarrett
P. Bray. Pishing from a boat at
Savage Rapids, they landed lour
beauties weighing a total of ninety
pounds. They reported that nearly
everyone who went out in a boat
n coked fish.
Bob Gllstrap. fishing with Dale
Burrls above the dam, caught a five
pound steelhead with a four-pound
test leader and a size 7 hook. He
used bolt.
Seven salmon were weighed In at
Burbee'a Grants Pass sporting goods
store Wednesday. A. J. Prultt of
Grants Pass caught two, one weigh
ing a little over 16 pounds and the
other slightly over 17 pounds. Wil
liam Kelly of Los Angeles landed
two salmon Wednesday. Best fishing
was reported at Savage Rapids.

HARRISBURG. Pa. (UP) Wilbur
Dale Holtzman. 7-year old srand
nephew of the late Benjamin Frank
lin Stence, legendary strong man of
central Pennsylvania, can swing a
22-pound sledge hammer and throw
his 13-year old brother In wrestling
bouts. The young "Sampson" tips
the scale at 116 pounds and stands
52 Inches.

seppe Sculllo, 20-year-old newsboy,
had $100 saved up and decided to
bet It on the favorite horse In the
feature race at Suffolk Downs.
He. bought a ticket, using the posi
tion number given on a scratch
sheet Instead of the official program.
He groaned when he found he had
a ticket on Natty Boy, Instead of
the favorite, War Minstrel.
The ticket seller was sorry, but
couldn't help him out. Friends felt
badly for him. but they though little
of Natty Boy's chances and refused
to buy the 100 ticket for even $20.
So Gulseppe held on.
You guessed It: Natty Boy won
and paid $51.40 on a $2 ticket or
more than $2500 on GuUcppe's mis
takenly purchased ducat. i

A CCC boxing card, featuring fight
ers from four camps In the Medford
area, will be staged Saturday evening.
May 14, as a feature of the Elka'
lodce benefit smoker and dance.
The benefit is to raise money for
the ladles' parlor at the Elk' Tem
ple, according to Ernest Scott, secre
tary. The smoker Is to be held In
the, basement of the temni at a
o'clock Saturday evening and will be
ioiiowea Dy onneing in the lodge
room. Elka and their ladles are In
vited. Capt. William C. Ryan, athletic of
ficer for the Medford CCC district,
is lining up the card and report
he has an abundance of tntant. ovac
40 fighters have expressed their de
sire to be matched In the bmts, so
Cpt. Ryan expects the five bouts
will feature some outstanding boys.
The tentative card has been ar
ranged, but final matchmaking will
take place on the afternoon of the
bouts. At that time, the men will
be weighed and examined by the
district surgeon and his staff and
definite bouts announced.
Troy King, 175 pounder of Prea
cott, with several good fights behind
blm. will meet Melner, of South
Fork. In the main event. Both men
have had plenty of experience, and
are willing to go.
In the semi-final, Art Rows, of
Wlmer and Bill Weavers, of Apple
gate, will meet at 150 pounds. Lera
Kennedy, of Presoott and BUI Byre,
of Wlmer, have been matched in
another bout that promises action.
Harvey Burney, of Applegate, and
Vincent, of South Pork, will prob
ably be paired at 140 pounds. In the
opening bout of the evening, Lee of
South Fork will meet Henry Gutier
rez of Prescott, at 135 pounds.
