NEW DEAL POLICIES
BEHIND FRENCH ILLS
IS
KANSAS CITY, Mo.. May 6 (AP)
Herbert Hoover attributed France's
economic plight to her adoption of
new deal policies, In an Interview
here today.
The ex-president, who stopped
here briefly while en route to the
Republican "grass roots' meeting in
Oklahoma City, said:
"France Is the only European state
that is not prosperous today. The
devaluation of the franc is only part
of the general consequences of Its
having adopted the new deal two
years ago.
"While other European nations
tightened their belts and balanced
their budgets, France went Its own
way. It didn't balance Its budget,
It began limiting production, lost its
export market, prices increased and
consumption dropped. One rinds
those conditions in France that hold
true here."
Hoover, In summarizing observa
tions made on his recent trip to Eu
rope, said other European nations
such as England. Czechoslovak a,
Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway
and Finland are enjoying fairly pros
perous economic conditions.

NEED OF STRONG
GIPJNNAIN
Need for Hepuallcan party strength
In Oregon at thla time was stressed
by Charlea A. Sprague. candidate for
the remibltcan nomination for gov.
ernor. at a gathering of 80 party lead
ers today at Valentine's cafe. Mr.
Sprague, prominent Oregonian and
publisher of the Oregon Statesman
of Salem, spent the day visiting
southern Oregon communities and
discussing details of his campaign
with leading republicans here.
In his brief, forceful address.
Spragua emphasized the need for two
strong parties In this nation, citing
as examples foreign nations wherein
the single party systems of govern
ment have resulted In loss of Indi
vidual rights and liberties. A plea
for the return to sound, conserva
tive republican principles was voiced
by Mr. Sprsgue. The maintenance
of a constitutional government Is
necessary, he said, after expressing
the belief that recent attacks have
been made on our Judiciary.
Financial stability In government,
another republican principle, must
likewise be maintained, he said, and
when the public credit is destroyed,
private credit Is also destroyed. There
are three ultimate results of the
present governmental finance pro
gram. In the speaker's opinion: re
pudiation, confiscation or excessive
taxation. Loss of confidence In the
administration was given as the fail
ure of business to gain its stride.
"We believe In the economy of
abundance rather than the economy
of scarcity." Mr. Sprague told his
audience, In stressing the need for
the return of this confidence with In
creased production and resulting re
duction of unemployment. Social se
curity, as we know it now, should
be supplementary to a real social
security made possible through cre
ation of Jobs for all."
Tn concluding his talk, the repub
lican candidate admitted that he Is
a conservative, yet assured that he
is also progressive. "The Republi
can party la now, I believe, in Btep
and In tune with the hopes and de
sires of the people of Oregon," he
said.
Frank VanDyke, Ashland attorney,
was toastmaater for today's meeting
and Introduced the speaker. Prelim
inary to the feature address, Frank
Hull pleaded for the people of this
nation to awake to the need for main
taining present Immigration lawa so
as to prevent Influx of political refu
gees from all nations.

Gives Passenger
Aid In Emergency
The Southern Pacific (this Is not

A woman with her infant daugh
ter boarded the Streamliner In San
Francisco for XiOS Angeles the other
day.
At San Jose It was found that part
of her baggage, containing needed
supplies for the baby, had been left
at home. Train otnclala were noti
fied and they had the station agent
In San Jose telegraph the circum
stances to the Salinas agent.
' Then the Southern Pacific system
really swung into action. Telephones
rang, messengers were called and an
order was placed with a Salinas dry
goods store.
Just as the Streamliner pulled into
the Salinas depot the messenger ar
rived with the awaited package and
placed it in the hands of the anxious
mother. The day was saved.
The package contained diaper an

Rialto's Comedy
As a nitwit bank teller with a pen
chant for investing in raffles, Joe
Penner is suspected of bank looting
and kidnaping and the result is a
series of hilarious highlights mount
ing up to one of the funniest pic
ture climaxes ever filmed, In "do
Chase Yourself," coming to the
Rlalto theater for tomorrow and Sat
urday.
"Romance of the Rockies. starring
Tom Keene, will play as the added
western hit.
Roxy Romance
h ITS" v.:
James Ellison and Jean Parker
have the romantic leads In Rex
Beach's favorite romance of the
North, "The Bnrrler." playing at the
Roxy theater today and tomorrow
only. Leo Carrillo, Otto Kruger, Rob
ert Barrat, Andy Clyde and Sara
Haydcn also have leading roles.
Robert Taylor Has
Lead Craterian Hit
Robert Taylor, starring In "A Yank
at Oxford," which opened a four
day run yesterday at the Kew Cra
terian theater, proved that he Is
more of a man than Jimmy Fldler
and a lot of other so-called pub
licity writers have given him credit
for. Taylor .literally walks off with
the top romantic comedy Bpot of
the year In the film which will
rank him among the best of the
screen's comedians. "A Yank at Ox
ford" was filmed In England as an
adventure by a major Hollywood pro
ducing company and after seeing it
yesterday at the New Craterian, the
audience sent cheers into the sky at
Its sheer cleverness and outstanding
comedy angles. The highlight of the
film to native Americans is the use
of coined British phrases of words
which appear very funny to persons
not acquainted with the cockney
accent.
In presenting Taylor In the title
role as the cocky all-star athlete who
comes to Oxford to "teach the na
tives" and himself learns plenty In
return, "A Yank at Oxford" affords
the star his greatest opportunity to
demonstrate his athletic ability, his
flair for comedy and his ability to
handle genuinely dramatic scenes.
Lionel Barrymore, as Taylor's father
and Maureen O'Sulllvan, as the Eng
lish undergraduate whom the hero
meets at Oxford, lend their accus
tomed polished performances, while
In the BrltiBh players who also have
leading rotes audiences may note
at least two potential stellar "finds"
of tomorrow. Vivien Leigh, as the
"other girl," reveals a flashing, yet
subtle, personality which may well
set a new stylo In "vamp-comedians."
Griffith Jones, as the Britisher whose
enmity fot Taylor motivates much
of the plot, looms as a moat person
able leading-man discovery, stalwart
in appearance and sensitive In his
performance.
