Steel corporation directors today de
clared the regular dividend of 9175
on the preferred stock.
The deficit for the first quarter
before payment of the dividend was
91,292,161 compared with a net in
come for the December. 1937, quarter
of 94.591 505 and for the first quarter
of the 1937 net Income of 928.561.633.
The deficit was the first to be re
ported for any first quarter since
that of 1985.
No action was taken with respect
to common stock. '
The corporation paid lta remaining
arrearage on preferred dividends last
August. Subsequently, regular divi
dends of 91.75 were declared in Oc
tober and January. Nothing haa
been paid on the common since last
December when 91 was ordered, the
first since 1932.
The preferred dividend 1 payable
May 20 to holders of record April 28.
Shipments of finished steel pro
ducts for the first quarter totaled
1,563,244 tons.

HEARS SENTENCE
CHICAGO. April 26. (AP) Teddy
Danlelsen, 16-year-old "average" high
school boy, was convicted of murder
by a criminal court Judge today and
sentenced to 14 years' Imprisonment
for fatally stabbing his mother In a
quarrel over his truancy.
His father, who had stood by Teddy
during his trial, stepped to the boy's
side as Judge Cornelius J. Harring
ton read the sentence.
"Don't hold me, dad; I'm all
right," young Danlelsen said.
He stood bewildered for a moment,
clasping his hands, until a lawyer
suggested he take a chair. Teddy
was coatless but perspiration was on
his forehead.
In the crowded courtroom was a
civic class of girls from Lucy Flower
high school. Other high school itu
dents had heard the trial.
On the witness stand the boy pro
fessed inability to remember clearly
Just what had happened when he
killed his mother.
PRAHA, April 26. (AP) Fears
grew today that If the Sudeten Ger
mans were given local autonomy
within Czechoslovakia they would
put through antf -Semitic measures
like those enforced in Germany and
recently Introduced In Austria.
Such fears were strengthened when
it was disclosed that published ver
sions of the speech made by the
nazlfled Sudeten Germans' leader.
Konrad Henleln, at Karlovy Vary
Sunday contained only a rraotlon of
what he told his followers.
The published version covered only
four typewritten pages, but It -Is
known that Henleln spoke for more
than r hour.

The curbslde nickel-enters will he
tried for a period of 13 months on
the busiest downtown streets, with
the manufacturing company receiv
ing 76 percent of the proceeds and
the lty retaining 25 percent until
the machines are paid for.
Thereafter, unless a public boycott
or some other unexpected develop
ment meanwhile forces their removal,
the mechanical cops will become the
property of the city.
Under the arrangement contem
plated here, the meters will dispense
31 hour-feet of parking space for A
cents. They will be Inoperative on
holidays and after 8 p. m-
