Brother Dies Mrs. H. W. Conger
of Medford, who has been visiting tn
Denver, Colo., for the past several
months, telegraphed Mr. Conger last
night of the death in the government
hospital In Denver of her brother,
Arthur L. Cator, 49. a World war vet
eran. His remains will be taken to
Corvnllis for burial, she Indicated in
the telegram. Mr. Cator visited here
with the Congers last summer.

the Rex cafe last night at 11:05 did
no damage, the fire department re
ported today. The cafe burns oil in
its range and some of it became clo;
ged in the chimney and caught fire,
It was explained. Firemen stood by

day to invite Dr. Douglas Hyde, his
torian, poet and retired university
professor, to run for the presidency
of Ireland in the election set for
May 31.
Thus the parties, Prime Minister
Eamon DeValera's Fianna Fall and
the opposition Fine Gael, hope to
avoid an election contest.
Dr. Hyde, 70 years old, was presi
dent of the Gaelic league from its
foundation In 1893 until 1915.
Refinery Tie-Up

A five-weeks' labor tie-up at the California-Hawaiian
sugar refinery plant,
largest of Its kind in the world, was
ended today wth CIO warehousemen
agreeng to accept a contract offered
by the company.
To hundred workers were ordered
back to their Jobs today and com
pany officials said the entire plant
personnel of 1800 men would be call
ed back to work within three days.
The sound made when a Hawaiian
player accidentally dropped a metal
comb on the strings of a Spanish
guitar suggested the type of instru
ment now known as the Hawaiian
guitar, according to M. H. Berlin,
Chicago musical supply wholesaler,
who made a trip to Honolulu to look

John Austin Wesco, 82. founder of
the Wesco penmanship system used
extensively In northwest and Pacific
coast schools, died here yesterday.
The system was adopted by the Port
land public schools In 1914.

Dr. B. W. Fairbanks, nutrition
chemist at the University of Illin
ois said In an interview yesterday
that rich persons nnd city dwell
ers were more likely to suffer
from malnutrition than farmers
and poorer folk.
He raid numerous natural foods
eaten by rural dwellers kept them
as healthy aa In pioneer hog-and-hominy
days.
"But the people who are enjoy
ing our industrial civilization are
not doing so well," he added.
"City dwellers have more money
to cater to the Idiosyncrasies of
their rwlets. therefore they arc
more apt to have malnutrition
than people In rural sections.
"The city people are eating
enough but their food is not well
balanced."
