Chapter 31
A Little Tight Budgeting
MINA was thinking the same old
thoughts, all over again.
Her terrible, insatiable longing
to have Richard for her own . . .
No effort, no reasoning, had been
ible to curb it. Now perhaps sepa
ration might.
Though she knew deep down in
lide of her that it was the right
thing, the hot tears welled up into
her brown eyes at the thought of
not seeing Richard for Ave long
months.
She put on Button's harness and
took him out with her while she
did the marketing. She had spent
this last day with her mother, and
had not got to 1? j in the

make a dear little emergency com
partment over there, don t you
think?"
"Just dearl" said David.
Two more new $1 bills, and an
other battered 50-cent piece, intc

side.
"Thirty-five dollars a week, ther

David was really having fun. Hi
said he was feeling married foi
the first time.
Led on byjiina, this deteriorated
into an ode on the more fleshh
joys . . . But presently, he returned
to the task at hand.
"Five dollars a day . . . Doesn'l
sound impossible, docs it, baby?"
"Heavens, no!" But. oh. heaven

"Anything if there should bt
anything left over from one day
it goes over to swell the next day'i
dear little compartment. Right?"
. "Right. David."
"Cash for everything."
"Cash for everything, David."
When she woke up the next
morning, Nina felt as though sh
had only so many words a day tc
David was having fun budgeting. Said he was feeling
married for the first time.

the marketing, she started the din
ner. And, after she had started the
dinner, she brushed her hair, and
refreshed herself for David. . . .
The thought of the dishes she
must wash made her feel angry
nd rebellious. She decided to ask
David to take her to the theater.
Dress up, and everything. If ever
there was a time when she needed
a little diversion, it was now.
But when David came dashing
In, with that engaging eagerness of
his, it was apparent that he had
already made plans.
"You know what we're going to
do tonight, sweetheart? . . . Book
keeping. We're going to do a little
tight budgeting, if you can stand it.
. . . We've sort of been meandering
long gaily, without any definite
plan . . , but, as the walrus said.
The time has come.' . . ."
Nina repressed a shudder.
Dishes greasy dishes and a
budget . . . and Richard sailing
farther away with every minute
that ticked byl
Thirty-Seven Fifty A Week
"rVD Honey get off all right,
J darling? Feeling a touch blue?
. , , Come here, then. David'U fix
that . . ."
But David couldn't fix it; and
the whole evening was one long,
hideous effort not to cry. . . . Into
the soup: into the dishpan; into
the strong box, with the separate
compartments, where David put
different allotments of his pitiful
week's salary ... It was awful.
The budget went like this:
They figured it on a $50-a-week
basis when he made more, they
greed to save the surplus.
Now then $12.50 a week for
rent. The long compartment at the
back of the strong box was the
rent compartment. Into it went two
fives, two ones new and a bat
tered 50-cent piece.
David licked his pencil.
"That leaves thirty-seven fifty
week, left over."
Nina said, making a tremendous
effort to act interested: "I can put
seven days into $35, but I can't into
7 . . . let alone that extra 50 cents!"
"I can't either. What do vou say
we put the two-flftv aside ... for
emergencies?"
Nina had to smile at the thought
of what a very tiny emergency it
would have to be.
"Good idea. Print 'emergency' on
say: and only so many breaths to
draw;
As usual, David had turned the
actual making of the budget into
a gay afTair ... but the sticking to
it, that was something else, again.
Amazing Discoveries
TTHAT next day that day after

sailed Nina's spirits were at a
very low ebb.
Flat . . . everything seemed fiat.

She realized, with tremendous
force, that the thought of Rich
ard his love his nearness the
possibility of meeting him, had sus
tained her through many a dreary
day: and now all that was re
moved . . . even thinking about
him, for if anything was to be ac
complished by his absence, she
must do her part.
The percolator. The toast. The
steel wool. Button's interminable
tours around the blork or else!
Fresh linen for the bed. Heave-Ho,
and over with the mattress . . .
Godl Would it never end?
And then, one day, simultane
ously with her amazed discovery
that the dogwood was blooming in
Central Park . . . she suddenly dis
covered that sho was having fun:
that the percolator made lovely
bubbly sounds and lovelier smells:
that her toast was actually good,
at last; and that steel wool pro
duced speedy and pleasant results.
She discovered that Button was
an engaging gamin, with a person
ality; and that making beds was
keeping her figure trim. But most
surprising of all was the discovery
that David's return at night was
something to look forward to with
an anticipation bordering on joy.
Amazing. . . ,
"Nina . . . sweetheart!"
Every evening he looked and
looked at her as though he had
been away for months. Each kiss
might have been Iheir first, for the
enthusiasm he put into it.
There was no getting around It.
it produced results.
Sweet David. All he needed was
a break: and though she was too
superstitious to crime out and sav
it to herself, she could not help
thinking: "I am freer." "I am
freer." And at last: "I am . . .
free."

and 170 mllea long, now comprising'
the Oklahoma counties of Clmaron,
Texaa and Beaver, waa successively j

Republic of Mexico and the north
ernmost tip of the Republic of
Texaa.
When In 1845 Texaa was admitted
to the union aa a state, the "pan
handle" area, lying north of 36 de
greea, 30 minutes north latitude, waa
prohibited by terms of the Missouri
Com prom I so from statehood, as the
document ruled that no laud nortn
of the "36 and 30" line should enter
the Union as a stave-holding state.
Inamuch aa Texaa favored slavery,
the strip of land waa abandoned
by Texaa. unclaimed by the federal
government, and until 1890, when
it was annexed to the Oklahoma
Territory, waa literally a "No Man's
Land" In the center of the United
States!
Strange as It seems, no govern
ment control whatever could De
exercised In this "Outlaws' Paradise"
during those 45 years. Law enforce
ment was non-existent because there
were no laws there. Extradition
also was unknown, and the spot Be
came a mecca of the bad men ot
the west, who had merely to step
over the border line to secure Im
munity from the law.

Pigtail Code.
From 1627 until 1912, when the
Manchu dynasty of China was over
thrown, Chinese men were torcea
to wear pigtails aa a sign of submis
sion to the Tartars who first placed
a Manchu on the throne of China.
Strange as it seems, these same
pigtails were utilized by Japanese
military officers during the Russo
Japanese war of 1904-06 to hide
secret messages. Chinese spies were
employed and messages were braided
