The Olive Rebekah lodge Is giving
a carnival Friday evening, December
3 at the Odd Fellows hall beginning
with a chicken dinner at 6:30

an evening of entertainment and
fun Is assured those who attend.
A musical program will be given

a museum and many other attrac
tions are planned. Concessions at
which fancy work, candy and many
other items will be on sale will also

Pythian Benefit
Planned Tuesday
The annual Pythian Home benefit
will be given at the Knights of Pyth
ias hall, corner Drape and Fifth
streeta, Tuesday evening at 8 o'clock.
Five hundred, bridge and pinochle
will bo played, a door prize will be
given In addition to prizes for high
score In cards. Refreshments will be
served and the public Is Invited.
American Legion
Auxiliary
Mrs. O. L. Overmyer, president of
Medford unit No. 15, of the American
Legion Auxiliary, announced today
that a district meeting would be held
In Medford on December 13th, and
that an invitation had been sent to
Mrs. Mae Waters, department presi
dent, as well as to a number of
other department officials, to be
present. District 4 Includes fourteen
auxiliary unite in the southern part
of the state, and extends from Reeds
port, in the north to Ashland and
Klamath Falls. It Is expected that
a large delegation of visiting auxili
ary members will attend the meeting
and Medford unit Is making exten
sive preparations to take care of Its
guests and show them a good time.
The business session will convene
on the mezzanine floor of the Hotel
Medford at 3 o'clock Monday after
noon, with Mrs. Fannie Thompson, of
Klamath Falls, president of District
4, presiding. Reports from each unit
president and from the various com
mittee chairmen will be read and a
membership roll call will be held
In the evening the legion and auxili
ary will hold a Joint banquet at the
Hotel Medford. to be followed by
dancing.
Mrs. Waive Enders, radio chairman
has announced that Medford unit
will be on the air next Wednesday
afternoon at 1:30. when a apeclai
hospital and rehabilitation program
will be broadcast over KMED.

What the Girl
Scouts Are Doing
The general course In training for
Girl Scout leaders under the local
council was completed Tuesday eve
ning and 43 adults attended the ses
sions. Including several council mem
bers, troop committees and interest
ed parents in addition to the regular
leaders.
As a result of these classes there
are eight new trained leaders regis
tered as captains and lieutenants
and each leader received some train
ing snd new interests for her troop
Replacing the training courses will
be Individual conference and assis
tance at troop meetings. After the
holidays a training course will be
offered for troop committees spon
sored by the Medford council for Girl
Scouts.
The regular Leaders' Association ol
the Girl Scouts will meet Wednesday
afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. Mrs. Otto
J. Prohnmayer has planned a Christ
mas program and the social commit
tee will serve refreshments.
Members of the training and per
sonnel and badges and awards com
mittees are also members of the
leaders' association. Mrs. V e r n a
Thatcher will report on the commu
nity service projects completed dur
ing Thanksgiving. Leaders are asked
to report to her regarding their
Christmas citizenship plans in time
for her report to the chairman of
the council before the regular coun
cil meeting which comes the second

Junior high troop under the leader
ship of Mrs. Alice Boswell and Mrs
Doris Htissong, meets regularly on
Wednesdays at the St. Mark's Guild

City and county residents throng
ed the Medford business district
yesterday to view the first general
display of Yuletlde merchandise ana
start their Christmas shopping early.
Hundreds residing on the edges
of town were conveyed to the shop
ping center by the Medford Motor
Bus company which gave free rides
all day long to cooperate with tne
merchants In the formal opening
of the Christmas shopping season.
Busses were crowded throughout the
day as alghtaeera and shoppera were
conveyed to and from town.
The Christmas opening was Mid
to be the most largely attended oi
any in recent years.
The stores were prepared for tne
throngs with an extensive and varied
display of new Christmas merchan
dise. Business was described as brisk.
Indications being that the ouylng
public would shop early this year
to take advantage of wide selections
and to avoid a last minute rush.
Additional decorations are to oe
put in place on city streets Mon
day when evergreen gnrlands will
be draped around lamp standards,
it was announced by Fred W. Schef
fel, city superintendent.
DRAMA INSTITUTE

Anmml Jackson county dramatics
Institute will open Monday evening,
November 39, at the court house au
di torim, according to Mabel C. Mack,
county home demonstration agent.
The Institute Is held each year for
the purpose of assisting adults inter
ested in community drama.
Miss Izola Jensen, extension spe
cialist In community social organiza
tion, will be Instructor. The pro
gram will Include discussion and
demonstrations In play selection, cast
ing, direction, acting, make-up and
staging. The Institute Is scheduled
for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
evening at 8 o'clock. There Is no
charge for enrollment. The only re
quirement la that those who enroll
will be expected to attend ill three
sessions.
All organisations Interested In pro
duction of plays are urged to send
leaders to the school. A special in
vitation la also extended to all rural
school teachers.

An organization meeting for the
newly planned Writers' Club In
southern Oregon will be held Wednes
day evening. Dec. 1. at 7:30 o'clock in
the small studio at Prultt's radio and
music center.

In short story or magazine article
writing are invited to turn out. The
club will be organized on an Informal
baMs and will provide an opportunity
for writers to discuss their problems
and offer helpful criticism.
The club Is an outgrowth of the
meeting held recently with Prof W P.
O. Thacher, of the University of
Oregon. In attendance. All writers
are being urged to enroll In the ex
tension courses In advanced short
story and magazine article writing and
If a sufficient number enroll. Pro
fessor Thacher will be brought here
for two meetings early in the yesr.

meeting, will be asked to help In the
organization plans. A temporary com
