Ye Poets Corner
Paying a Little on The Rent
(The old prospector's story as told
to J. O. Reynolds)
Listen I while X tell a story
Happened over in Idaho;
X was camping by the roadside
Wondering which way to go.
Twas the nineteen -seven panlo.
Everyone was broke you know,
I, myself was up against it.
Only had a dollar or so.
Well, as I sat by my csmpflre,
Heard a sound of moving feet;
Glanced up quick, and saw a
stranger
Who was neither clean nor neat;
Slowly he came shuffling forward.
Reached my fire and took a seat;
"Partner,' says he, "bow's the
chances
For a little bite to eat."
"Chances are Just fine," X answered,
Stirring up the coals anew;
"Coffee soon will be a-bolling
And there's chow enough for two;
Haven't got much that is fancy
Biscuits, beans and Irish stew
So If you can stand my cooking
Won't be long before we ohew"
Stranger ate a hearty dinner,
Famished as you may surmise;
And-It did me .good to watch him
Dreamily through half-closed eyes;
Suddenly as in a vision.
Causing me intense surprise,
Where had been the hungry
stranger,
Christ was sitting In disguise.
With a start, my eyes I opened
So that I might clearer see;
Twas but fancy yet a murmur
Seemed to reach me quietly
"Inasmuch as you have done It,
From the heart and willingly,
To the least of these my brethren
You have done It unto me."
Tills produced a weird impression,
Though to me 'twas evident
It was pure Imagination,
Still before the stranger went.
I dug down Into my pocket
And with humor, kindly meant,
I said, "Pardner. take this dollar.
It may help to pay my rent.'
Some might say that I was foolish
Thus to aid an unknown tramp,
Who perhaps was Just a drifter.
Begging ood from camp to camp.
But in truth It made me happy,
Think that was a luky day;
For I'm sure 'twas Christ who got
it
Glad I gave It all away.
In my home we have a custom
Which we sacredly pursue;
Always is a stranger wolcome
To our fare no matter who;
And if Christ in strange apparel
Comes d is gu 1 sed broke, hungry,
lame
Clad In soiled and tattered gar
ments He'll be welcome Just the same.
To All Lovers.
What does It matter that summer
has fled?
We have the sunshine of love In Its
stead.
The silvery hoar frost and crystalline
sleet "
Cannot harden our hearts, our love
Is complete.
So we think not of winter, cold and
strong.
Our love Is a flambeau, a flower, a
song.
