PITTSBURGH FOR
ROSE BOWL TILT
Stanford Coach Adds Voice
to Chorus California
Prefers Dartmouth Is Be-1
lief Small List Eyed
By RtMBl.L 9. NEHTAXD
BAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 33. fAP)
California's Qolden Bear, No. 1 foot
ball guy In his own territory,
searched through the national rec
ords today for a suitable opponent
to invite for a touchdown scramble
In the Rose Bowl, New Year's Day.
The Pacific Coast conference cham
pions, strongest unit to represent
California In nearly a decade, bad a
small but formidable list from which
to select a team for the classic,
which before "bowl" games sprang
up like mushrooms, came close to
determining the mythical national
title.
"Best In Bait"
If Oregon follows the sugges
tion of C. E. ("Tiny") Thornhill,
Stanford coach whose team took a
13-to-0 licking from the Benrs Sat
urday. Pittsburgh win be Its rival at
the big Pasadena encounter.
"California easily ts the best team
on the coast and should pick Pitts
burgh, the greatest team In the east,
for the Rose Bowl. Both have what
It takes. The whole country wants
to see them play," he said.
To Kenneth Priestley, graduate
manager, will fall the responsibility
of picking the opposing team. He
won't talk on this especial subject.
Among Rose Bowl possibilities are
Dartmouth, Pittsburgh, Ford ham, Ala
bama and VUlanova. None has been
defeated. Dartmouth, Pittsburgh.
Ford ham and VUlanova have been
tied, Dartmouth twice. Alabama's
record Is unsullied.
Dartmouth Preferred
Although Priestley will not con
firm It, It Is believed California
would prefer Dartmouth, a member
of the "Ivy League" and of unques
tioned scholastic rating. Word re
cently, however. Indicated Dartmouth
would not be In a receptive mood
toward an Invitation because of ex
aminations falling around the holi
days.
"Feelera" probably already have
been sent out to Dartmouth, Pitts
burgh, Fordham, Alabama and VUla
nova. Remaining on California's sched
ule Is a tentative date to' play Geor
gia Tech at Berkeley, December 35.
The game will not take place. The
schools had an agreement If either
reached the Rose Bowl It would nul
lify the prospective Christmas Day
meeting.
While California was clinching the
conference title, other league games
saw Washington dump Oregon, 14 to
0, and Washington State upset Ore
gon Bute, 7 to 0. Another unex
pected reversal resulted In previously
undefeated Montana losing to Idaho,
fl to 0.
Southern Methodist hung a 26-to-13
defeat on the University of Cali
fornia at Los Angeles, groggy from
Its most disastrous season In years.
Only one conference game remains
on the schedule. It will bring U. C.
L. A. and Southern California togeth
er December 4.

It won't be 44-0 this year. -Much
as we would like to place
quotation marks around that state
ment and point the finger at Sir
William Bowerman of Medford high's
Black Tornado, It
F 7J! can't be done.
tf y For the simple
I vwS I reason that the

comes across
with such a pre
diction regarding
the big Thanks
giving Day clas
itlly ft u lea,
sic between Eugene and Medford
here next Thursday, those words will
have to stand on their own merit.
Also In the meantime, all you who
are Interested can gather around
while your favorite columnist sput
ters out his private reasons why he
believes the current Tigers are not
going to be chopped to pieces by the
Axman from up north.
In the first place, Coach Frits Kra
mer hasn't the football club he had
In 1936 not by a long sight. That
Eugene outfit last season was a holy
terror. It handed Medford one of Its
worst defeats In history and against
Willamette valley competition was
just as potent. There was simply
no stopping It, and It ended the sea
son undefeated and untied and con
sidered by far the most powerful
prep aggregation In the state.
This year, however, Kramer has
had his troubles. Graduation hit
the Axemen a stunning blow. Mar
shall ("Dutch") Shields brought his
Vancouver, Wn team to Eugene and
got a deadlock with the Axemen.
McMlnnvllle, not so hot, also tied
Kramer's team. Then on Ar mis tic day
Salem's Vikings blasted out a 13-7
victory In the mud and Eugene's
undefeated victory atrlng, extending
through almost two years, was snip
ped. Oregon City followed with a
13-0 win over the Axemen last Friday
to prove Salem's win was not a fluke.
Regarding the Medford angle, there
Is no comparison between the situa
tion last year when the Tigers trav
eled to Eugene for their most severe
licking and this season, with the
Tornado at its peak. Mtxlford was
on the downgrade In its 1936 game
with the Axemen. Ray Lewis, great
hairback, had been forced to the
sidelines with a hip Injury early in
the year: Bob Olson had been de
clared Ineligible; and Ardo Stocks
had been knocked oxit of commission
with hurts. The Tigers had been
tied by Ashland and beaten by Kla
math Falls and Bowerman's highly
geared attack, which In earlier games
had manufactured touchdowns ga
lore, was sputtering and knocking
along on three cylinders.
Look now. The Mark Tornado
Is really rolling. The team has
been brought along rather slowly
and Is at lat beginning to func
tion with the power that was
alwins there but didn't start
genernllnc until the Klamath
Falls battle. A alight letdown
after the 0-0 tie with the Pell
ram was experlrnred agulmt
liend. but that was no divgruce.
No team In Oregon ran hold the
l.avu Henri to four tmirliili.un If
they really want to turn on the
heat.
Then came Ashland, the squabble
figured a tossup In every respect, and
I Medford roared to a 30-7 victory be
I hind a really great forward wall and
on the wings of flying Bobby Ettln
1 ger and Jack Bowman. Then, Grants
Peas last Friday night In the cham
pionship game, and it was Medford
copping 0-0 In almost Impossible
playing conditions. On a dry and
fast track, the Tigers would have
beaten the Cavemen by 30 points.
No, friends. It won't be 1 44-0
this year. In fact, it won't be
34-0, we sincerely believe. Eugene
may win; tt will be the decided
favorite, but It will be 'a ball
game.
Talk about your "ending In a blaze
of glory" business, Mr. I. Plckem cer
tainly wound up his season of foot
ball prognosticating In such a man
ner. It was his best week of the
year, and In addition to calling the
turn on the nation's big upset, the
master picker hit two scores smack
on the buttons.
Plckem named Harvard's valiant
crew to atop Clint Frank and Yale's
undefeated run by a score of 14-13.
The score was 13-0 for Harvard, an
upset In anybody's league, and while
Plckem missed slightly on the actual
score, the big form reversal was
pointed out. Plckem also named
California by two touchdowns over
Stanford: the score wss 13-0, a clean
KO for the ole maestro. And, Wash
ington over Oregon by two touch
downs, and the final count was 14-0.
another Plckem masterpiece.
In all. the renowned prognosticate
named nine out of of 13 encounters
correctly. He called the turn on
the following: Medford-GranU Pass. I
Southern Method Is t-UC LA, Baylor
Loyola, Fordham -St. Mary's, Ohio
State-Michigan, and Pltt-Penn State,
In addition to those three already
mentioned. Misses were on the
Idaho-Montana, Oregon State-Washington
State, and Navy-Princeton
affairs.
So Plckem leaves you today for
another year, and sincerely hopes
that all of you have paid off the

following his Invaluable tips. The

TITLE CL
CHICAOO. Nov. 32. (AP) A lot
of things can happen before the
national pro footbail league season
ends, but it's ft good bet that the
New York Giants and Chicago Bear

the title in 1934. On that occasion,
the Giants won out by donning

and scampering to victory on a slip

went out of their way to help Chi
cago get a chance for revenge by
practically eliminating Green Bay
from title consideration.
New York, with a 10 to 0 victory
over the Packers, handed Green Bay
Its third defeat. Chicago's Bears now
lead the west section with six wins,
one tie and one defeat, and are
heavy favorites to clinch the right to
