London newspaper even credits him
with a proposal of a marriage dowry
for servant girls but he denies that.
One reason why so few English
girls choose to be maids nowadays
Is the poor chance of marriage in
Jobs where there is neither time for
place to meet or entertain a boy
friend.
Not only that, but the eligible
young men of modern England re
portedly look upon servant girls as
beneath them.
The dowry Idea is an old one. The
latest suggestion would have govern
ment and employer contribute a few
cents a week toward a $130 dowry
which the servant, if she wishes to
marry, would be entitled to after
seven years.
The league of good household mis
tresses would be a voluntary organiz
Badged houses would offer more I
leisure for maids, better living condi
tions and greater social comfort.
Domestlce service, the labor mln-1
lster finds, ranks at the very bottom
of the girls' list of preferred Jobs.
They would even rather be factory
workers than domestics. As a rule
they earn only about 96.25 a week In
the factory, compared to the 15-a-week
average, plus board and room.
In a household Job. But factory girls
have evenings, Saturday afternoon
and Sunday free. As maids they
would get only a half day off each
week, with alternate half Sundays
free.
Then, too, a domestic often has
to work In the country where movies
are scarce.
Thousands of new industries in
cluding the lighter work in the re
armament drive are providing girls
opportunities for Jobs they did not
have in the old days.
Many English families have thrown
up their handa and sold or shut
down the large, old-fashioned houses
which require a huge staff of serv
ants. Families are moving into modern
flats which are springing up like
mushrooms. In the smaller space of
a flat, milady can do her own work,
aided by modern household equip
ment and perhaps by a twice-a-week
maid furnished by the management.

The ranch will be operated by Mr.
Miller. Mr. Gerwlck's son-in-law, ac
cording to the announcement.
The Wallla ranch, one or tne
largest In this area, was formerly the

of Soda Springs on the Dend Indian
road.
Mr. Oerwlck and his wile have
rented the Sawyer residence at 47H
Allison and will move to Ashland to

Boll berries and water together for
ftve minutes. Add pineapple and ral- j
sins. Add rest of the Ingredients, j
Boll gently until thick and Jelly
like. (That will require about '20
minutes.) Stir frequently. Pour into
sterilized Jars and seal.
Pumpkin CuMard Meringue.
l'a cups cooked pumpkin
1 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
'4 teaspoon cloves
y4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1-3 teaspoon salt
3 egg yolks
24 cups milk
3 tablespoons butter, melted'
3 tablespoons orange Juice
Mix pumpkin with sugar, spices.
vanilla, salt, yolks and milk. Beat
well and add rest of the ingredients.
Pour into a buttered baking disn.
Bflkt for one hour1 In a pan of not
water In a slow oven. Spread with
meringue and bake 20 minutes. Cool
and serve.
Meringue.
3 egg whites
1-3 cup granulated sugar
teaspoon salt
14 teaspoon orange rind.
Beat whl.;s until stiff. Add sugar
and beat until creamy. -Add rest ot
the Ingredients and roughly spread
over the pudding.
Toasted -doughnuts make a tasty
: slteay snack with fruit or cider.
Cut the doughnuts in half. Toast
them until they are well browned
and spread them with a thin layer
of orange marmalade.

Mayo frequently acts out scenes to
demonstrate the effects he wants.
