bishop of Portland. In a regulation
distributed today to the Roman Cath- i
olle churches of Oregon, forbade the
playing of love songs and popular i
wectdfng marches at marital cere
monies. The message said that all frivolous j
music, either Instrumental or vocal,
should be discouraged but that all '
"theatrical solos, duets, non -Catholic
hymns, profane melodies or any song
not approved by the ordinary are
strictly forbidden" In marriage rites.
Organists were Instructed to see
that their playing was not "sensu
ous In character nor unbecoming"
and that In the playing of modsrn
music there was nothing profane or
Indicative of "motifs adopted in the
theaters."
The archbishop, saying the purpose
of the message was to obviate a re
currence of "such infractions" as have
proceeded from Ignorance or inad
vertence, listed such selections as
these which should not be played at
weddings:
Bridal chorus and wedding march
from Lohengrin. Pilgrim's March from
Tannhauser, Wedding March from
Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's
Dream, Meditation from Masaanet's
Thai. Beroeuse from Godara's Joce-
lyn, the aria from Saint Snen'a Sam
son and Delilah, nor transcriptions of
popular songs such as O Promise Me,
Face to Face, Absent. At Dawning.

SALEM. Nov. 10. (AP) A move
ment to amend trie federal constitu
tion to provide for enactment of the
Townsend old age pension plan was
started here today when three state
Townsend leadera filed an Initiative
measure to ask the leglalature to re
quest congress to call a constitution
al convention.
Glen O. Wade, Pendleton. Towna-
end manager for dlatrlct two, would
not comment on the action, but said
that the leglalature would he re
quired to petition congress for the
convention If voters approve today'a
Initiative at the Nov. S, 1938, general
election.
If the attorney general approves
the potltiou'a legal form, 30.030 sig
natures would place It on the ballot.
Others who filed the petition were
R. G. Epley, Salem, board member for
the first district, and Arthur Moore,

critics of his anti-parole atand today
with the assertion he would rather
be termed a member of the so-called
"machine-gun school of criminology"
than the "cream-puff school."
