A nsw series of Lincoln-Zephyr mo
( tor cam, longer and .more dashingly
4 sleek than their predecessors and dls
' playing an entirely new Impression
of modern motor car styling, went on
display yesterday at the showrooms of
the C. B. Gates Auto company. Med
ford Ford-Llncoln-Zephyr and Lin
coln dealers. A large crowd of south
ern Oregon people were on hand to
view the smartly-styled Lincoln-Zephyrs
for 1038.
Two racy new convertibles, a sedan
and a coupe, make their debut among
the six smart body types which com
prise the 1938 Lincoln-Zephyr group.
In addition to the new convertibles,
the line Includes a sedan with four
door6, a coupe-sedan with two doors,
a three-passenger coupe and a town
limouslne. A wide range of choice In
colors In a new baked enamel finish
Is available.
From front to rear bumper, the
styling of the ne cars Is modern
i and well-groomed, displaying a fresh
approach In the development of the
" streamlined design created only two
years ago when the Llncoln-Zepryr
first waa presented to the public aa
f the Lincoln Motor company entry In
the medium-price field. The new
styling permits substantially ampli
fied body roominess.
The "tear-drop" front end, which
suggests the highly streamlined front
of a racing plane, blends harmon
iously with the balance of the de
sign. The conventional radiator grille
has been subordinated. The front Is
closed except for two openings near
the bottom, through which air is &A
mltted to the engine compartment.
The "alr-atream" treatment is car
ried out smartly. In the long sweep
of the hood, the rakish tilt ot the
windshield, the graceful body con
tours and the new fenders and lamps.
The fenders are massive, gracefully
formed and give an air of strength
to the design. The headlamps are
streamed Into the front fenders, the
combination tall and stop lamps Into
the rear fenders. The license plate
bracket la In the center of the rear
deA door.
Luxurious new fittings, wide, deeply-cushioned
seats and a general air
of roominess characterize the new car
Interiors. The driver compartments
,. have been 'enlarged.
A new Instrument panel, which al
' so Includes a closed grille extending
down to the top of the transmission
housing to conceal radio and car
heater Installation, la flanked on
either side by a glove compartment.
Controls, Including throttle, choke
and light switch, and a cigar lighter
are grouped around the speedometer
located above the grille In the mid
dle of the panel. Engine recording
Instruments are arranged around the
circumference of the speedometer dial.
Below the speedometer la a large
electric clock. The panel, and grille
are finished In beige. Garnish mould
ings are In "allver glow" walnut fin
ish. The new seat are deeply-cushioned,
unusually comfortable, upholstered In
broadcloth or cord. There la a soft
edge cushioned with sponge rubber on
the back of the seat above the robe
cord, replacing the chrome rail of
the 1037 modela. Deeper, more restful
arm rest are provided in rear com
partment. The Lincoln clear vision ventilating
system It continued, tti design pro
Tides adequate freeh air at all tlmea
without draft. Rear quarter windows
i. of the sedan are of the casement
type, opening outward.
' Exceptionally large luggage com
partment are provided In all new
body types. The compartment, reach
ed through the rear deck hatchway,
also encloses the spare tire and It
upportlng frame. When the deck Is
lifted tire and frame are revealed.
These can be awung down out of the
way to give access to the luggage
pace. The compartment la lighted
automatically. Additional luggage
, space Is found back of the seat In
the coupe and convertible coupe.
A number of significant engineering
advancements have been made to Irr
prove the already brilliant perform
ance of the car. They are the result
of research by Ford and Lincoln en
gineer, plus the experience of the
" iir,t 46.000 Lincoln-Zephyr owners.
Amone the important improvement
In the chassis Is the Increased wheel
base, now 125 Inches, three Inchea
longer. Thl lengthens the spring
base to 13 Inches.
' Owners during the last two years
have commented repeatedly on the
unusual riding qualities of the Lin-roln-Zcphvr
and particularly on It
ability to give a single passenger a
"Mill-load" ride. The lengthened
whelbae tends to Improve the "ride."
The 110 horsepower V-type U-cyl-lndr
engine and the transmission
have been moved forward in chassis.
The additional space thus provided
increases the depth of the driver
compartment. The transmission la
now located under the cowl, rhe
houslrw his been lowered and the
gear-shifting mechanism moved out
of the way of driver and front seat
passengers, thus leaving the compart
ment unobstrtKted.
The new Lincoln-Zephyr bodies owe
part of their roominess to their un
usual width, the result of the elim
ination of the conventional running
hoard Passengers may atep directly
nto the floor of the car.
