Delphian Meeting
Beta chapter of the Delphian so
ciety held a very Interacting meeting
Thursday morning at the home of
Mra. H. L. Brown with Mra. J. s.
Orlbble aa guest speaker.
Mrs. Orlbble traveled extenalvely In
the orient the past summer and gave
a fine description of 'Theaters of
China' for the program. 8he also dis
played handiwork from Japan, China
and the Philippines.
A round table discussion of George
Bernard Shaw followed the talk with
all members participating. This prov
ed to be especially timely and Inter
esting because of the recent brosd-
caat of the famous dramatist and
wit.
The next meeting of the society
win be held November 18 at the home
of Mra. J, E. Wallace.

Meet on Saturday
The Degree of Honor Juvenile club
will meet Saturday morning at 10:15

American Association of University
Women met Thursday evening a

for the first session of the fall.

man, farmer, complained to county
officials today that more than a
dozen dams built by beavers en
dangered about 6000 reclaimed acres
on the Beaver creek WPA project.

ON SAFE DRIVING

Barry B. -Ruth of Eugene, district
deputy grand exalted ruler, addressed
members of the Medford Elks lodge
at regular. session last night on the
"Safety Driving" campaign 'being In
augurated by Elka clubs throughout
the nation and which will be started
immediately by the local lodge.
Ruth stated that the most Im
portant part of the program was
the education of lodge membera of
courtesy on the highway. He drew
a comparison between motorist and
pedestrians, explaining that the lat
ter, after unintentionally bumping
Into another pedestrian, usually
apologised graciously. However, he
pointed out, a motorist following an
accident was almost certain to be
come angry and pugnacious, placing
all the blame on the other fellow.
Ruth explained the cause aa being
the fact that automobile drivers con
trolled the power of 500 men, caus
ing a psychological effect leading to
the attitude.
Hugh Rosson of Salem, state traf
fic director, also addressed the lodge
meeting, quoting facta and figures
regarding the tcrrlfflc yearly death
and Injury toll from auto accidents.
The definite campaign to be car
ried out by the local lodge will be
announced soon. It was stated. J. F

committee, which also Includes Carl
T. Tengwald, Floyd Hart and O. O.

A class of candidates waa Initiated
last night, following which a ban
quet dinner was served by Elk Chef
Lloyd Morthland. New members of

Raymond C. Lapp, Dr. C. I. Drum
mond and LeRoy V. Williams.
It waa. announced there would be
no meetings on November -11 and
November 25. Armistice and Thanks
giving. On November 18, there will
be a crab feed, followed by the an
nual 'Turkey Trot," and "Days of
'49" celebration. All money raised
will be used to finance the yearly
Christmas baskets given to the
needy of Medford.
