Jones, one of the last of picturesque
old prospectors, passed away Tues
day at his home near here. He had
su fit red a stroke two years ago at
the time of the death of his brother
Lum, with whom he had prospected
these hills for years. Since that time,
however, he had been fairly active and
tn good health. He celebrated his
81st birthday October 35.
William Allison Jones was born In
Newton county, Arkansas, October 2S.
1856, the son of Scab and Caldonla
Jones, who had come to Arkansas
from Alabama. He came to Oregon
87 years ago from Oklahoma and
prospected with his brother Lum.
They staked claims to large deposits
of lime, black and whle marble, which
they used In their stone cutting.
Most of the tombstones In local cem
eteries were carved by Lum nnd Al.
He Is survived by a daughter, Mrs.
Donte Messing, with whom he made
his home; a son, Tom Jones, who will
continue In the stone cutting trade
of his father; a brother, Oeorge, of
Grants Pass, and a granddaughter,
Irene Jones, who lives here.
Puneral services were held at the
' Bull & Hull funeral home, Wednesday
morning In Grants Pass, with burial
In Granite Hill cemetery. ,

Franklin D. Roosevelt said today she
was "very sorry" she would be away
from the White House on a lecture
tour when the prealdent entertains
the Duke and Duchess of Windsor at
luncheon or tett.
