AMERICAN FORCE
Doomed Battalion Holds
Grimly to Small Area In
Chapei As Remainder of
Army Flees Before Japs
SHANGHAI, Oct. M ,AP) The
On I ted States marines and British
troops offered tonight to ld with
drawal of a Chinese battalion, trap
per by Japanese, to and the menaoe
of stray . bullet falling Into Shang
hai's International settlement with
Its thousands of foreigners. Including
Americans.
The offer was refused.
The defiant almost certainly
doomed, battalion held grimly to a
small area within Chinese Ohspel
which the remainder of their army
abandoned yesterday to flames and
advancing Japanese.
Crowds Watch Battle
Crowds of foreigners and Chinese
bed gathered on roofatops, despite a
shower of machine gun bullets, to
watch the battle along the settle
ment's northern border when the
American and Brltsh offer of aid was
made.
There was danger to the Interna
tional settlement, too, on the western
edges and along the French conces
sion frontier, with a major battle In
progress around Hungjao. suburb In
which are located many of the city's
finest homes.
Brig. Oen. John C. Beaumont, ma
rines commander in Shanghai, and
the British major general, A. P, O.
Telfer-Smolllet, connoted the em
battled batrsllon In Chapel by a
still serviceable telephone line con
necting with a warehouse In the bat
tle sone.
The American and British com
manders suggested that their forces
be used to aid the beleaguered Chi
nese In obtaining sanctuary south of
Soochow oreek.
Chinese Unworrled
Reminded of the destruction that
Japanese planes might cause to their
position. Commander Col. Chin-Yuen
replied:
"We are not worried by the Japan
ese planes and we're prepared lor
their Infantry."
That the final hour of the doomed
battalion was at hand seemed cer
tain when a Japanese navy spokes
man declared Nippon's bluejaeketa
would mop up all scattered Chinese
units In Chapel.
Japanese naval headquarters ad
vised United States marines to take
precautionary measures against pos
sible severe - action to wipe out the
Chinese battalion, oppoalt one see
tton of marine defense lines.
Designating the Chinese detach
ment as stragglers, tbs navy spokes
man predicted they soon would be
killed. ,

day's market.
Heavy buying orders at the start,
with numerous blocks ranging from
1000 to 16,000 shares changing bantu,
put the ticker tape several minutes
behind during almost the entire first
hour. ...
Traders were quick to garner prof

or cancelled In later proceedings.
Dealings also slowed. Fresh support
entered the list on the final lap
and the ticker again lagged wltn
quotations bounding forward. to
somewhere near their best levels of
the session.
Notwithstanding boosting of the
short selling ante, the fact the
amount naoessary tor speculative
