A new method of treating diabetes
with Insulin swallowed .in small tab
lets instead .of by injections with a
hypodermic needle, was forecast today
before the National Academy of Sci
ences. Three University of Rochester phy
sicians, Dr. John R. Murlln, Dr. Law
rence E. Young, and Dr. William A.
Phillips, announced that they had
successfully treated some human be
ings and dogs suffering from diabetes
with the new solid preparation.
The compound Is composed of in
sulin and hexyl-resorclnol, a common
antiseptic and fever-reducing drug.
The resorclnot acts as an emulslfler
to clean f-t from the linings of the
stomach and intestines by malting It
more soluble In water than it nor
mally Is.
Method Practical ,
The University of Rochester exper
imenters had previously shown that
insulin can be absorbed through the
stomach and intestines and then acts
In the ordinary way to burn up the
excess sugar In the blood which pro
duces dl a bete. Presence of fats, acid
conditions, and the enzyme pepsin
prevented this absorption, however.
The next step, now nearing comple
tion in testa on human beings, was
the addition of the resorclnol to neu
tralize the pepsin, produce an alkaline
condition, and emulsify the fat In
order to clean up the digestive tract
for entrance of the Insulin.
Trials on the human diabetes suf
ferers enable the Rochester men to
"state with certainty," Dr. Murlln
said, that "Insulin can be absorbed in
sufficient amount to produce abrupt
changes In blood sugar."

The discovery of a new hormone,
named Menterocrinih" which Is se
creted into the Intestines from the
blood to stimulate the production of
digestive Juices, was announced be
fore the academy by another Roch
ester university physician, Dr. E. 8.

tive'' hormone which "stimulates the
production of all components of the
Intestinal secretion, Including the di
gestive enzymes" and Is thus highly
essential to life. Without It food
would be about as useful as so much
sawdust. It is a white powder easily
soluble In water.
At the present time the hormone Is
not yet ready for use in man for the
possible treatment of digestive dis
turbances and diseases, Dr. Nasset
said, but work on It is going forward
as rapidly as Is possible.

Present indications are that the vete
rans administration hospital at
Roeeburg. now being converted Into
a specialized Institution for care ol
neuro-psychiatrics, will be ready for
occupancy about January 1, Col. E.
P. Tandy, manager, announced today.
The task of conversion has been
greatly delayed by difficulties in
securing materials, due to labor and
transportation troubles, Colonel Tan
dy said.

nautical and WPA survey party from
Washington, D. C, which visited
Medford Saturday, and Marshall
Fields, Chicago, and other large con
cerns In leading cities on the west
coast.
Mr. Petri has applied for a patent
on his process and the trade-mark
is "Nestle Down." His headquarters
are at 314 East Main street.
Construction of the quilt differs
from that of the ordinary quilt in
several ways. Principal difference la
the assembly of the top and bottom
covprs which are not atltchod to
gether. In the conventional quilting
manner but ar separated. This pro
vides "air-plus-down" Insulation, ef
fectively holding the body heat in
under the quilt, and also gives great
flexibility. The 100 percent goose
down used Is contained In special
bags to facilitate the "tucklng-ln"
feature of the quilt, and also the
changing of cover material to har
monize with bedroom furnishings,
or when the material becomes worn
out. This Is an economical advan
tage. A fine quality taffeta ln several
colors or combination of colors is
used to cover the quilts, and all seams
are locked and edgea corded. The
generous size and resiliency mke It
possible to tuck the quilt under the
mattress without injury. The quilts
are very light, weighing about 4'4
pounds, and are 70 by 84 Inches In
size. Three-quarters and baby quilts
are nlso made.
