Why Indians Feared Crater
Is Revealed in Old Legend

There' legend that' never been written about Crater lake, and
Prof. Irving Vlning of Ahland lovei to tell the itory. He told It to
the Pioneer loclety at It annual meet in? In AJthland this month.
Mr. Vlning beard the story from i
Joaquin Miller, famed western poet,
a thfy eat around a camp fire on
Cherry creek In the Crater lake area
long ago. The legend had been told
to Joaquin Miller by an old chief,
tain, and relate why the Indiana
were afraid to look upon the blue
watera of the lake.
"I like this atory because It deals
with human emotions, father than
with gods, as does William Stool's
legend," Mr. Vlning said.
In early days the Indians of the
northwest were well organized under
Chief Multnomah, who dwelt on an
Island In the Columbia river. Mult
nomah posseAsed lithe young run
ners who were ever on the alert to
carry mandates to all sections of his
kingdom. In those days It was cus
tomary for an Indian youth, upon
reaching adolescence, to leave the
teepee of his father and go forth, i
without food. In search of a god In
spirit to be his leading Inspiration,
and who would command to the
youth the will of his Father In the
Happy Hunting Ground.
So at eventide, Just as the stars
were blossoming forth, a certain youth
stole away from the teepee and en
tered the deep forest, constantly keep
ing bis ear tuned for the voice of
the aplrlt god In the treetops. He
heard nothing, and felt In his breast
no response to a spirit call. He heard
the aong of the brook and still there
was no response. He watched the
eagle, and the wolf, and the coyote.
Still no response. Day after day he
wandered In search of the totem of
the spirit god.
He climbed the timbered slopes of
Mt. Maw. ma, and aa he did so, he
felt an urge within his breast. A
series of voices called from the dis
tance. He was drawn toward the
mountain top, where he beheld the
majesty of blue waters hundreds of
feet below him. He heard voices,
urging him down to the water's edge.
He scaled his agile body down the
jagged lava cliffs, where he noticed
the spirit fish called "Llao" In the
water. The Great Spirit told htm If
he bathed In the water of the lake
he would become endowed with su
preme power, but he was warned
against Injuring "Llao," lest the
wrath of the Father would be upon
him.
The youth ventured a dip In the
ley waters, end became the greatest
Jiving being In existence. He climbed
dangerous cliffs, slew wild animals,
and was all-powerful,
But vanity overcame him. He lis
tened to the voles of self-pride, and
one day maliciously thrust a spear
Into a spirit fish. Immediately the
Father loosed his wrath, and a grvt
storm arose, lashing waves against
the lake walla, and turning the blue
of the water to a blood red. The
youth was hurled Into the churning
watera and drowned.
It was then that Chief Multnomah
Issued a mandate saying that all
would die who thereafter gazed upon
Crater lake with hate or pride shel
tered within their hearts. But those
who harbored a feeling of love when
they beheld the magic blue would be
endowed with the good will of the
Great Spirit, and should depart from
the lake In glory and honor.

this Item and the company hopes to
put up a good sized pack this season
according to Manager Ralph B.
Koozer.
An unusually short tomito season
was ended October 15, Adverse wea
ther conditions retarded the crop and
the pack was only about 58,000 cases
of canned tomatoes and tomato Juloe,
engntiy more than half the amount
packed last year.
A conalderable quantity of the total
was Juice, and additional equipment
was added for Its production, consid
erably speeding up capacity.
Approximately 1800 tons of toma
toes were used, which brought an
average price of 811.87 per ton to the
growers for No. 1'a and No. 3'J. on
the U. S. government grading bMls.
The pack was distributed almost
entirely on the Pacific coast. Includ
ing northern California. Oregon and
Washington, although a small ship
ment was made to Cairo, Rrypt, which
may result In some good export dis
tribution In future years.
UNIVERSITY HEADS
SCOFF AT CHARGE
EUGENE. Oct. 38. (AP) Univer
sity of Oregon officials declared
Wednesday that every possible effort
was made by the university's faculty
and students to avert rioting which
occurred In Eugene Monday when
3000 Oregon State college students
Invaded the campus here In a "vic
tory parsde." They scoffed at charges
In the Oregon State Barometer that
the pa rode ra were trapped and mistreated.
According to Virgil D. Earl, dean
of men at the university, no of
ficial warning was given of the "In-
vaalon" by Oregon Stat officials, and
when It was learned from Junction
City of the mob headed this way as
many students as could be reached
In hnlf an hour were urged to give
the Staters a friendly, good-natured
welcome. The Oregon band was even
out to play the Oregon State school
song by way of greeting.
No disorder of any kind occurred
Earl said, until a lad on one of the
Stater 'a autos started tossing ears of
shelled corn at assembled university
students. Troubles started immedi
ately after that, however, and spread
like wildfire.
Oregon officials cited many in
stances of charity for the invaders.
Many ducked in the mill race were
provided with dry clothing. Frater
nities and sororities here fed scores
of State students at lunch.
University officials and student
lenders are Insisting that all Oregon
students keep out of Corvallls and
avoid all further arguments.

Irreducible school fund had 9.303 007
In assets on October 1, most of the
aaaets being In state-owned lands,
the state land board reported today.
Of this amount, 9B.884.R06 was
credited to common schools, 306.8R0
to Oregon State college, and $111,321
to the University of Oregon. The re
ducible fund amounted to KWVR35.
