A film program that ahould appeal
to all types of audience opens a
three-day run at the New Craterian
theater. For one thing, the feature
la one of the moat hilarious bits of
nonsense the screen has shown for
quite some time. "Woman Chases
Man." with Miriam Hopkins and Joel
McCrea co-starred in a rapid-paced
fun farce made solely for the purpose
of tickling the funnybone.
A special attraction, of interest to
fall football fans particularly those
of this state Is the films taken yes
terday at the Oregon-Oregon State
football game In Eugene, the yearly
clash between the two state colleges.
Third on the program, advertised
for last week -but failed to arrive here.
Is the Robert Benchley short reel,
"How to Start the Day Right,' 'one of
Benchley'a comedy of errors along tho
same lines as his prior hits.
The story of "Woman Chases Man"
has Miriam Hopkins, as a graduate of
architecture, looking to Charles Win
nlnger, eccentric builder of dreamB
and backer of worthless Inventions,
for a Job In his latest drenm, a model
village. The only catch to tho Job
after she gets it. Is to induce the
old man's son, Joel McCrea, in loosen
ing up his purse-strings and backing
the venture. The son, however, ex
perienced in his father's somewhat
goofy Ideas that have eaten up his
fortune, refuses to squander hts own
money in what he considers a foolish
Idea. Then the chase begins.
In order to inveigle the son to part
with $100,000 to start the model vil
lage, Miriam gathers together her old
pals and they all go to work on him.
to no avail. Then the big discovery
the son has a chink In his armor.
Liquor. Given the right amount
(one drink) and he'd sign anything,
anytime, anywhere. But others dis
cover the same fact and it becomes
a mad chase to fiee who can get him
drinking first. It all winds up in a
treetop. with alx of them doing their
best to coerce or dissuade the sign
ing of contracts. The tree wins th
argument pitching them nil to the
ground.

sequences of Bobby Breen's latest
musical starring vehicle, "Make a
Wish," which heeds the-double bill
program opening a three-day pro
gram opening a three-day run at the
Rlalto theatre today. Basil Rathbone,
dropping his villain roles for the
first time, and Marlon Claire head
line with the singing eter.

Bobby at a boys' camp In Mfllno,
where he makes the acquaintance of
Rathbone, a composer of operettas,
who Is staying at a nearby lodge.
Through Bobby, the musician es
quires a very personal Interest In
the Isd's young mother, former sing
ing star of the stage, much to the
annoyance of her fiance. The situ
ation reaches a minor climax when
Rathbone urges her to play the lead
ing role in his new operetta.

Hill grange, Inst night announced
his cnndldacy for state mastor in
opposition to Ray Gill, Incumbent.
The announcement was made by
Mr. Darby while attending the 811
vcrton grange as a visitor. He has
received a number of nominations
for the office from local granges
and Is said to be strongly supported
in Marlon county and some other
places In the state.

Mrs. Kathryn O'Laughlin McCarthy,
former oongresswoman, today de
manded Investigation of what she
termed "wholesale sterilisation of
girls" In the Kansas Industrial school
at Ballot before Oo. Walter A. HMi-
man came into office.
Mrs. McCarthy told a conference of
Democartlo women school records
showed 63 of the 148 Inmates at the
time Huxman was inaugurated early
this year had been sterilised and
that 33 more were slated for opera
tions. "So far as I can determine, ster
lllmtton was done as a punishment,
rather than for any special good for
society," she said.
"It is horrible to think these girls
have been deprived of motherhood
and ft chance for a happy married
life."
Will Beck, former vice-chairman of
the state board of administration,
said a number of girls had been
sterilized but only after formal hear
ings and with consent of parents or
guurdlans.
Mrs. McCarthy declared "the par
ents' pleas did not stop these whole
sale sterilisations, but that la due
to the faculty state law. I am going
to do all In my power to have that
law changed."
