of both human and animal malig
nant growths, most deftly of which Is
cancer.
Dr. John H. Lawrence, member of
the medlcsl faculty of Tale univer
sity, and Dr. Joseph Hamilton are
coordinating the facllltlea of tha unl
verslty'a radiation laboratory and tne
school of medicine in the work.
The cyclotron magnet, which Im
parts radio-active qualities to sub
stances, recently underwent a five-
weeks overhauling. Since that time,
Dr. Lawrence has been conducting ex
periments with one of its products,
rsdlo phosphorus.
Another cyclotron product, radio-
sodium, has been used by the depart
ment of roentgenology of the med
leal school to determine Its effect on
certain malignant growths In human
beings. It has developed enough
oltnlcal merit to Justify further ex
perimentation, experts believe.
The radio-active elements have
been used experimentally In the con
trol of poultry disease and in a num
ber of experiments that open a new
field of blologio and medical test
activities.
The cyclotron has demonstrated the
Intense activity of neutron raya Ip
destroying blologio materials, includ
ing both normal and neoplastic or
tumorous tissue.
Tt has been proved that neutrons
are more biologically effective than
the X-ray, but they do not as yet
provide as valuable a weapon In the
combating of cancer because they art
not as well known.

disclosed today In a report by Drs
Jease L. Carr, Frederick Proescher and
A. M. Moody to the Journal of th
American Medical association for pub
lication. In experiments conducted In large
gas furnaces with temperature rang
ing from 600 to 1,600 degrees, the doe
tors discovered Incinerated blood de
veloped a "definite pattern similar to
a multiple collection of pentagonal
rings."
