CLEVELAND (UP) A man hunt
which has netted 800 auspecte a
aoore more of whom nave been Jftir
ed for other serious crimes has
reached the two-year mark without
shedding a single clew on the mys
tery of Cleveland's 10 headless vic
tims of s latter-day Jack the Rip
per.
It was In September, 1935, Alter
the finding of two decapitated
bodies In Kingsbury Bun, a deso
late region near the heart of the
city, that Detective Bergt. James
Hogan took up the trail of "The
Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run."
Today, 13 detectives are working
full time on the case. In the i4-
month period they have not turned
up one substantial clew to the
Identity - of the surgicaiiy-scmea
murderer who prowls the city's in
dustrial flats and the lake shore,
lures his victims by making friends
with them, lops off their heads
while they still are alive, and then
severs arma and legs with the pre
cision of a practiced anatomist.
Earlier Murder Linked
The mystery began with the find
ing of the first two bodies two
years sgo. Exactly one year oeiore
that the nude torso of i woman
was found on the shore . of Lake
Brie. Investigators since have linked
that death with, the series of torso
muraers.
Bergt. Hogan has kept no record
of the number of telephone calls
from persons who think they have
a solution to the mystery. He says
the number "would run Into thou
sands." He has on file more than
600 letters and telegrams containing
fantastlo tips and leads.
Every tip has been Investigated
from that of the New York crlm
lnologst and psychatrst, who sug
gested the murders might be the
act of a suicide olub, to the advice
of a man who said he was an ex
pert and wrote In offering to solve
the case within three months If paid
300 a month and given 30 men to
work with blm.
Most dramatic part In the chase
has been played by two detectives
who were assigned as a special de
tail. Combing the three-mile length
of gulley-cut Kingsbury Run, they
have dressed aa hoboes, crawled Into
sewers, mingled with shitty trans
ients, sddled knife-grinders, and
demented former internes.
Suspects of Many Types
, They have brought In a huge as
sortment of suspects: tramps, butch
ers; perverts, demented persons, par
oled convicts, barbers, male nurses,
employes of slaughter houses and
voodoo doctors.
But there has been no trace of '
the "mad butcher." Numerous teats
have been made for the killer's
fingerprints. Not one print has been
found.
Thn round-up of suspects has pro
duced some unusual cases.
One mumbo-Jumbo charaoter,
brought from the wastes of Kings
bury Run, had adorned himself with
beads and ornaments. He had dis
covered a secret forfhula, he told
officers, for transplanting human
heads. The Investigators lost Interest
In him when It was revealed he had
been In prison while some of the
murders occurred.
Another suspect long sought but
never apprehended, lived on a street
bordering the run. His favorite rec
reation was performing Tarzan-style
acrobatics on a 40-foot hand cnbie
car of his own construction. He had
dug a tunnel, for what purpose po
lice did not know, and aa a pastime
he Indulged In strangling rabbits
and rate with his, hands.
Mental Quirks Itpvenled
Traces of culture and a knowledge
of medical terms gave credence to
the tale of one shabbily -dreMed
man of how he had lost a prosper
ous medical practice. He stroked
snarled Van Dyke as he told how
a blow on the head led to his men
tal and physical breakdown.
A "hermit" pick-up In the run
was wearing woolen undurwear, two
suits, two overcoats and four hate
on a hot afternoon. He produced
newspaper clippings aa "statement
from my bankers" and displayed
the photograph of a "beaut.ru. heir
ess I'm going to marry when 1 make
my second million." The detectives
also found sn assortment of IS

longing. Subsequently, however, he
was released.

Hogan said, "and it would seem
like a pretty hopeless situation. But

Dora Bebecca Barrow waa born
May IS. 1886. at Sparta, 111. In 18HK
aba moved with her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. John Barrow, to Beulah,
KnM.ri where .she grew to woman
hood. On February 18, 1885, she waa
united In marriage to Albert R. Hess,
who passed away In 1901. To till
union were born three children, one
daughter, Mrs. Mary Orllflihs ot
Medford, and two sons, Arthur D.
Hess, of .Medford, and Walter J.
Her, ,o Hood River. Ore. In 1901
the family moved to Washington
where they resided until 1910, when
they moved to Medford where de
ceased has since made her home.
At an early age she united with
the United Presbyterlsn church in
which ' she retained her membership
until coming to Medford where she
transferred her membership to the
Methodist Episcopal church. She was
ever devoted to her church and took
an active part In Its activities until
falling health made It Impossible
for her to participate.
Besides her children she leaves to
mourn her loss, three sisters, Mrs.
Ida Watklns and Mrs. I. N. Mccol
lorn of Medford, and 1-rs. W. D
McCollom of Spokane, Wash., two
brothers. . A. P. Barrow of Chtco,
Cal., and O. L. Barrow, of Mccune,
Kaa.. five grandchildren, John and
James Hess of Hood River, Billy
Hess and David and Ruth Griffiths
of Medford, and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be conducted
at Conger'a funeral parlors on Tuea-
day, October 19th. at 2 o'clock p. m.
by Rev. Joseph R. Knotts. Inter
ment will be In the Siskiyou Mem

Thursday waa a big day at the high
school for the. "Insignificant fresh
men" were supposedly put In their
"proper pieces" by the upper class
men.
During the day each member of the
freshman class had to dress according
to directions previously given, the
glrla to wear a green ribbon on their
hatr, the boys to wear their trosuer
legs rolled to knees, both boys and
glrla were to be highly painted and
to wear a green vegetable around
their neck. Also they had to have a
tin can tied to an ankle end to ride
to school on a stick, carrying their
school books In a pall in lieu of a
school' bag.
In the evening they assembled at
the school house where the Initiation
oeremonlea were performed at the
close of which refreshments were serv
ed by the sophomores.
