LAST OF OCTOBER
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 18 The
1938 model motor cars which will be
featured at the twenty-second annual
Pacific Auto show, opening In San
Francisco's civic auditorium on Octo
ber 30, will more than ever appeal to
the fastidious taste of the woman mo
torist. This was the opinion expressed
yesterday by Bill Street, vice-president
of the San Francisco Motor Car Deal
ers association, under whose auspices
the auto show- Is staged annually.
"The motor car designers and oulld-
era are directing their appeal more
than ever to the woman buyer," said
Street yesterday. "It Is Interesting to
look back over the thirty-eight year
history of the automobile industry
and recall the amazing advancement
that has been made In this compara
tively short period of time by the
Automobile manufecturers, designers
and builders.
"During the early history of the In
dustry, automobile showa were staged
In New York and Chicago primarily
a& a trade proposition. The manu
facturers telt that only In this way
could they Impress the public with
the Importance of this new "gasoline
buggy" and they found also that only
In this way could they interest deal
era in representing their merchandise
In the far-flung corners of the coun
try. "In the early days, dealers from all
parts of the United States flocked to
New York and Chicago for these an
nual displays, selected the make of
cars that they wanted to sell, and
' gave the factory cash or their notes
for whatever cars they would desire
to purchase for the next six month
period. It was through this method
that most of the factories received
their financing in those early days.
"In those days, too, the manfuac
turers were primarily concerned with
producing a car that would run with
out breaking down, a car that would
"get you there and get you home."
In the years that followed the in
dustry strove for a nmber of tnlngs;
first, economy of operation, then pow
er and speed In the motors; then
comfort In riding, and finally, style
In appearance.
"It Is Interesting to recall that this
year's auto show marks what might
be termed ' the Sliver anniversary of
the self-starter's universal adoption,
tt was this invention that caused the
turning point in the Industry and
the beginning of quantity produc
tion. The old hand crank models were
not very popular, even with the men,
and were almost impossible for wo
men to operate. In this twenty-five
year period the Industry has moved
from a very unimportant position In
American life into the first place,
for today the automobile manufactur
ing business Is the number one In
dustry of the country.
"Models that will be shown at the
forthcoming auto show which will
prove of exceptional Interest to the
motor shopping public are those
which will have automatic shifting
and others which will employ vacu
um operated shifts, In which the dri
ver merely does the selecting of the

SOUTH BEND, Ind.. Oct. 16.
America got Its first official look
at the world's first "flying automo
bile." the Waterman Arrowblle, when
Mrs. Paul Q. Hoffman, wife of the
president of the Studebaker corpora
tion, christened the auto-plane "Miss
South Bend." Mr. Hoffman. Geo. D.
Keller, vice-president In charge of
Studebaker sales, and other execu
tives of the corporation and seven
thousand citizens witnessed the cere
mony. The craft la powered with a Stude
baker six -cylinder engine, and la one
of five Arrowblles designed by Waldo
Waterman to be used by Studebaker
to demonstrate the world's first "fly
ing automobile" to the American
public.
Seven thousand were awed by the
ability of the plane to fly at a top
speed of 125 m.p.h., land easily, de
tach Its wings quickly, and drive like
an automobile. Its top road speed
la 75 m.p.h.
The first Arrowblle, "Misa South
Bend," was piloted by Latham A.
Perett, who flew the ship from Santa
Monica. Cal.. to South Bend, a dis
tance of 3300 miles In only 38 hours.
The flight disclosed some startling
evidence of Studebaker engine per
formance and economy, according to
Perett. In flying the distance, the
vehicle delivered IB miles per gallon
of gasoline and It used only two
quarts of oil.
The "flying automobile" haa regular
airplane wings which may be detached
in less than three minutes and left at
the airport hangar while the pilot
switches hla engine's power from pro-
pellor to wheels and takes to the
highways. While on the streets and
boulevards the propellor does not re
volve, the two rear wheels of the ve
hicle being supplied with both for
ward and reverse power, and arc
equipped with brakes.
