successful tea Saturday afternoon at

ers willing. The Junior and senior
princesses, Katherlne Conroy and

Successful Event
Crater Lake guild of the First Pres
byterian church held Its annual ban
quet last Monday evening with more
than sixty guests present. This was
the kick-off banquet and the sports
motif was carried out in both pro
gram and decorations. Football place
cards, autumn flowers and a minia
ture gridiron gave a sports atmo
sphere to the entire affair. Decora
tions were in charge or Mrs. trans

Study Club to Hear
Mrs, Angus Bowmer
The Thursday Morning study club
will hold the first meeting of the
fall Thursday, October 14 at the Girls
Community club on Bartlett street at
9:30 a. m. As a special feature, Mrs.
Angus Bowmer, of Ashland, will be
guest speaker, talking on the topic
"Re-dlscovering Shakespeare." Mrs.
Bowmer Is regarded as an authority
on Shakespeare and spent much of
lost year in England In study on the
subject.
Mrs. C. C. Lemmon will speak on
the subject "Shakespeare Our Con
temporary" and Mrs. H. C. Obye will
talk on A Shakespeare Garden."
Both are members of the club.

The camp alto was Ideal, being
right in the heart of the Redwoods.
We girls roughed It In the full sense
ol the word having the 'good earth
for our bed and only the stars over
head. All of our food was prepared
out-of-doors and we ate In "army
style from our mess kits.
We girl scouts, numbering on an
average of two hundred each period,
were classed In groups according to
age, being known by such names as
ducks, owls, crickets and butterflies
The counselors, totsllng approxi
mately 40. who supervised the Indi
vidual groups were known by animal
names. The camp director. Vail
Stark was known as the Besr or
Grizzly.
The activities of the day were ar
ranged In a definite schedule, which
we scouts rigidly followed. We rolled
out of bed at 6:30 a. m. to the tune
of reveille and hurried to breakfast
at 7:30. The time from S a. m. to
10 a. m. we spent doing odd Jobs
about our "nests" and the kitchen
An assembly was called at 10 for
announcements, puppet shows or
sjmllsr entertainment and for sing
ing camp songs. Lunch was served
at 13 noon after which we resteo
until 3:45. Then, after we received
our share of the milk and crackers
being served, we busied ourselves
until 8:30 In learning the Intricacies
and proficiencies of such arts as
leatheroraft, puppetry, raffia and
string work, bead work, dramatics,
archery, nature observation and ap
preciation, astronomy, sketching, and
swimming.
Dinner was served at 6 p. m. and
from 7:45 until 8:16 we enjoyed
recreational and social diversions of
different sorts around a huge camp
fire. Taps sounded at 8:30 p. m. at
which time, all girls were required to
be In bed.
Girl Scouts attend this camn from
every state in the union. Our own
Camp McLoughlln nature counselor,
Mrs. Raymond Driver, who
known as Gray Owl was a nature
counselor the last period at Chapar
ral. The Inspiration and knowledge re
ceived from this camp experience I
hope to ahare with my troop and all
llrl scouts of this council.

Vacation In Portland
Miss Maxlne Robinson Is leaving
this week for Portland where she will
visit her sister Miss Kathryn Robin
son. She will be away two weeks.

The marriage of H. Clifton Garnett,
son of Mr. anu Mrs. Ben Garnett, and.
Miss Nina Kidwell. daughter of Mrs.
J. C. Black, is of interest to a wide
circle of friends here. The ceremony
was performed In San Francisco Sat
urday, October 2 at 7:30 o'clock as a
culmination of a romance begun in
Ashland high school. Mr. and Mrs.
Howard Osburn attended the couple.
Mr. Garnett Is a graduate of Med
ford high school and attended the
University of Oregon at Eugene. He
has been In California for the past
year. The couple Is to live at 1070
Green street, San Francisco.
W.C.T.U. Will Hold .
Monthly Meeting
The monthly meeting of the W. O.
T. U. will be held at the home of
Dr. Eve, Carlow, 26 South Laurel
street, Thursday afternoon at 3
o'clock. Mrs. Dawes will conduct
devotion als.
For the program reports of the
state convention held at Newburg
October 5 to 6 will be heard. Mrs,
Minnie Bryant, Mrs. Russell, Mra.
Cox and Mrs. Ellen Thrasher, of
Grants Pass, attended the sessions.
Mrs. Thrasher Is county president.
Mrs. C. A. Meeker will give special
music.
