day afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the
home of tbe bride's parents. Dr. R.
M. Stevenson, pastor of the Presby
terian church In Marsbfleld, read the
ring ceremony In the presence ol
about 45 relatives and friends.
Mrs. Frank True, Bister-In-law ol
tbe bride and Earl Llttrell. brother
of the bridegroom, attended the
young couple.
The couple will make their home
In Marsbfleld. The groom la well
known In southern Oregon and the
wedding Is of Interest to a lare
circle of friends.

Returning home this morning from
tbe north was Mrs. H. U. Lumsden.
accompanied by her brother, J. B.
Berlin, who makes hi home here

Mrs. Lumsden has- spent the past
three weeks with her son and daughter-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Treve Lums
den of LaOrande. The group made a
vacation tour of British Columbia and
other northern territory.

officers of tbe Grant Pass post and
auxiliary Monday evening.

Many visitors were present from
other southern Oregon units.

Leaving for the south Monday
were Miss Edna Elfert and her sister,
Mrs. Marie Swinson, who was return
ing to her home at Napa. Calif., after
a visit here and in other Oregon
cities.
Miss Elfert plans a several days'
visit In the California city, expect
ing to return home Sunday.

University of Oregon.
Tongue, who is well-known here, is
to continue his study of law at Yale
university. He Is also a graduate of
the University of Oregon.

Leaving by train for the north this
morning was Mrs. M. D. Flnd
ley of Salem, who is returning to her
home after a short stay here.
Mrs. Flndley has been tbe guest of
her son and daughter-in-law. Dr. and
Mrs. Dwight H. Flndley since the first
of the week. She also visited In Grants
Pass while here.

ing of the fall college term was Miss
Mary Dallalre, who Is to enter Ore
gon state college at Corvallls.
Miss Dallalre left Sunday by motor.
She will enroll as a freshman at the
Corvallis campus.

a local electrical supply concern,
sold an electrical refrigerator to
an elderly couple of the Dufur
neighborhood.
Yesterday he received a call for
service. .When he arrived at the
Dufur home the head of the house
told him in no uncertain term
that his refrigerator was no good:
that It had not produced a single
ice cube.'
Debeaumont investigated. He
found the Ice trays dry.
"Haven't you put any water in
these trays?" he asked.
"No." replied the elderly Dufur
ite. "We didn't know you had to."

however, has pursued a wise policy

BLACK'S EX-PARTNER

WASHINGTON. Sept. 22. (AP)
William E. Fort, a former law part
ner of Associate Justice Hugo L.
Black, said today he would leave it
up to the Jurist to say whether they
were fellow members of the Ku Klux
Klan.
Fort, now a special assistant to
Attorney General Cummlngs, refused
to discuss Klan affiliation with re
porters. "Mr. Black le on his way home,"
Fort said, "and I am sure that any
statement he makes on his arrival
will be the truth."
Fort and Black formed their law
partnership in Birmingham. Ala.,
October 1, 1925, and terminated it
two years later.
Cummlngs said today the Justice
department had not made any in
vestigation of Black's qualifications
prior to his appointment to the su
preme court.
At a press conference Cummlngs
answered reporters' queries with the
following statement: .
"It has been frequently stated that
the department of Justice made no
Investigation of Mr. Justice Black
prior to the time Jils name was sent
to the senate. This is correct. In
deed, it is not the practice of the
department of Justice to make in
vestigations of prospective appointees
to the supreme court, or any other
Investigation relative to them.

Lengthy Feature Film to
Show All Phases of Fruit
From Tree to Table

ing three days filming harvesting of

ing the two through orchards and
plants of the valley.
Each step In harvesting, from pick
ing, transporting, washing, grading,
packing and storing to the time the
pears are loaded on freight cars for
their Journey to all parts of the world,
were covered In the film.
AU packing plants which are mem
bers of the bureau were photographed
for Individual scenes depicting the
various 'processes used to prepare
pears for market.
Further pictures will be taken this
week-end in the Wenatchee district.
To complete the picture of the pear
from "tree to table." orchards in
bloom will be filmed next spring.
Also Included in the picture will be
shots of Pacific coast ports, showing
loading of the pears onto ocean ves
sels. The care taken in handling of
the fruit In all stages will be em
phasized throughout the film.
Pictures of the Hood River and
Yakima districts will be taken later.
Scenic shots of mountains, lakes and
rivers will also be covered by the
cameraman.
The elaborate 45 -minute sound
feature will be released next fall af
ter all phases of the growth and
shipment of pears have been photo
graphed at the peak ot each activity.

Fall From Auto Fatal

burn Rasor, 18-year-old high school
student, died today from Injuries re
ceived last night when he fell from
the running board of a moving auto
mobile. He lost his grip and crashed

Sabotage Causes

PORTLAND. Sept. 22. (AP) Tes
timony that steam was turned off
from the steering engine of thp
States line steamer California before
the vessel ran aground near Astoria
Saturday brought the launching of
Investigations by the marine Inspec
tion bureau and the United States
Justice department.
J. Marple. first assistant engineer,
told the Inspectors that he found
the steam valve tightly closed after
the accident, that he opened it and
that the steering motor operated
perfectly when the vessel was r
turned up-river for an Inspection of
damage.
