Deanna Durbin America's new 14
year old sweetheart who rose to
fame In "Three Smart Girls," Is
(starred in her second picture, "100
Men and a Girl," a comedy drama
with music which opens a three
day run at the New Cratertan the
atre today. Featured with Deanna
Durbin Is Leopold Stokowskl, lam
ous conductor of the Philadelphia
Symphony.
An unusual cast surrounds De
anna. Adolphe Menjou Is seen as
her father, a musician who, with
100 fellow artists, seeks recognition
of talent and a chance for a liveli
hood. Alice Brady portrays a society
matron who promises Deanna to
sponsor the orchestra. Then the rich
woman flounces off to Europe and
leaves Menjou- and Deanna In the
lurch.
Eugene Pallette. as Alice Brady's
husband, has the situation placed
squarely before him on his shiny
mahogany desk by Deanna Durbin.
Her eloquent statement of the 100
men's dilemma causes him to agree
to sponsor the orchestra, providing
Stokowskl will conduct It.
Nothing daunted. Deanna goes to
Stokowskl. She charms him first
with her singing. He agrees to hear
the orchestra and finds they are
excellent musicians. Then the story
sweepB to its climax, carrying hu
man drama, delightful comedy and
memorable music to a rhythmic
crest. Stokowskl has devised, a new
method of recording music which
gives the effect of sound In per
spective. Deanna treats the world with the
songs millions of fans have waited
to hear her sing among them are:
"A Heart That's Free," "It's Rain
ing Sunbeams" and other famous
arias.
Also Included In the cast are Billy
Gilbert, Jack Smart, Alma Kruger

BENNETT IS SUED FOR
ALLEGED RAID DAMAGE
'PORTLAND, Ore.. Sept. 18 (UP)
Portland's militant city commissioner.
J. E. Bennett, who personally led
several raids on what he termed "Chi
nese gambling Joints" was today the
defendant In a 11000 suit filed by
Larry Chin, Chinese, for alleged dam
age done to the front door of his
residence in one of the raids. .
The door was smashed when Ben
nett led a raid against the house to
secure evidence In hie one-man
gambling probe. Chin charged Ben
nett "purposely, maliciously, deliber
ately and wantonly smashed In the
plate-glass front door entrance
plaintiff's home." He asked 937.50 for
the door, $3 damage done to laundry
in the place, and 9950 for puntlve
damages. '
