NEW YORK, SepV. 2. (P) The big
town started getting bigger today as
t vanguard of American World war
veterans began a march 4ack to Now
York.
They were the first delegates to
the American Legion convention the
first of 000,000 men and women, Le
glonnalrea and their families who are
expected to attend the festivities
starting officially September 30 and
lasting five days.
The hotels already have posted the
little cards which say, In effect: "It's
no use; we're rilled for that week."
The housing committee wjll utilize
ships In the harbor, Pullman cars
In railroad yards, and 30,000 rooms
In private homes.
Biggest Convention.
Harry W. Colmery, national com
mander of the Legion, Is exuberant
over the convention outlook. "This
will be the biggest convention the
Legion has had," he said and added,
a bit quietly, "or ever will have."
The Legionnaires, It seems, first
paraded 'on Fifth avenue 30 years ago.
Some of them did, that Is: most of
them were shipped out aboard trans
ports undor cover of darkness from
Hoboken, N. J across the Hudson
from Manhattan. The men who are
In the Legion now averaged 24 years
of age then.

Now the Legion has a membership
of 1,000,000 men whose average age
Is 44 yeara. It la near the top of
Us expected membership, which
reached 1,100,000 In 1931,
With the questions of bonus and
prohibition out of the way, Legion
officials expect no political Issue to
arise In the business sessions of the
convention. There will be an effort,
however, to pass a resolution reconv
mending the government draft capi
tal and Industry as well as man
power In the United Statae In the
event of war.
Parade Will Be Climax.
The climax of the program will be
Tuesday, September 31, when the
Legionnaires parade up Fifth avenue
with 500 bands playing. The march
la expected to take 17 hours, lasting
until about 4 a. m.
But that's only one parade.
"There'll be a parade every two min
utes an official one, I mean," as
serted one committeeman. "When
the visiting outfits, detrain on Sep
tember 19 and 20, they'll march to
their particular hotels behind their
own bands. Then they'll march to
the other hotels, serenading they'll
walk right Into the lobbies playing

Each Legionnaire, as he registers,
will pay 2 and receive his badge,
official program, and a book of tick
ets which, without further ado, en
titles him to everything from sight
seeing trips all over Manhattan to
boxing matches In Madison Square
Garden.
There, with a seating capacity of
20,000, will be the first convention
meeting at 9:30 a. m Monday, Sep
tember 20. Tuesday, the Fifth ave
nue parade. Wednesday, business
session In the Metropolitan opera
house. Thursday, the annual elec
tion of officers.
The Legion's fun outfit, the 40 et
8,H will hold Its own parade Sep
tember 20 on Eighth avenue. After
the tumult and singing ends, about
10,000 of the visitors will go on to
France and see once again the places
where they fought, and where so
many of their buddies remain.

LEAD ONCE MORE
TO COURT FINES
Twice within a fortnight the burn
ing of a yellow-Jacket nest has led
to fines In Justice of the peaos court.
Exterminating the pests' nests Is
legal enough In Itself so long as the
burning la not done on forest land
without a- permit or the fire Is not
allowed to spread. But when viola
tions occur, the forest service la quick
to clamp down the law In Its effort
to protect the timber areas.
Latest to be haled Into court was
Jack Falkaske of the Dead Indian
road. He pleaded guilty In Judge L.
'A. Roberts' court In Ashland Tuesday
afternoon to setting fire on forest
land without a permit. He was fined

He set the fire Monday near the
Naben sawmill on the Dead Indian
road, to burn out the nest of yellow
Jackets that had bothered him In his
work, the forest service said.
Bmoke from the fire was reported
by a lookout and a crew of men was
sent to put It out. Dale Bums, fire
guard of the Rogue River national
forest, filed the complaint.
On August 24, James E. Roberts
and Clifford Crump were each ' fined
20 and costs by Judg? Roberts for
permitting a fire to spread. Cn the
previous day they set a fire to burn
out a nest of yellow-Jackets that had
hindered them In. their logging work
on the Greenspiings. They thought
the fire was out when they quit work
but It flared up..

Mrs. Horace Turptn was called to
Treka early this week to be with her
husband, who Is In a serious condi
tion at a hospital there as a. result of
an automobile aocldent Monday.
Mr. Turpln, driver of a Pierce Auto
Frleght truck operating between Med
ford and 8nn Francisco, drove his
truck to one aide of the road on an
up-hill ;ra4e to avoid an- approach
ing car, described as "coming end
over end." Further details of the ac
cident were not learned here, other
than that the careening car collided
with Turp ln's truck, resulting In his
Injury, which Inducted, among other
things, broken ribs, and a broken
collar bone. Mr. and Mrs. Turpln
make their permanent home In Med
ford. althoun Mr. Turpln Is residing
here at Ruch for a few months.
125-FOOT PLUNGE IS
FATAL FOR MOTORIST
MYRTLE POINT, Ore.. Sept. 2.
(AP) Injuries suffered Monday when
her car dropped 125 feet Into the
shallow Coqullle river proved' fatal
to Mrs. Luther Hall, 47, of Powers.
- She was brought to a local hos
pital by members of a Coos county
motorcade, who freed her from the
overturned automobile.

ager of the firm, stated today. Han
sen Hardware will have the largest
housewares store between Portland
and San Francisco when this expan
sion program Is completed, Mr. Wil
son said.
