day en route from Williams creek
to Crater Lake national park where
he la employed as ranger-naturalist.
Dr. Applegate, one of the best known
botanlsta on the Pacific coast, has
been studying Crater lake flora for
the past several years. He made his
first study and collection In 1886,
long before the park was established.
Dr. Applegate. curator of the Dudley
Herbarium of Stanford university. Is
a nephew of Capt. O. C. Applegate,
famed Indian fighter.

of California to resume faculty work.
He spent last winter In Jspan, New
Zealand and Sumatra studying vol
canoes as a part of his project to
piece together the volcanic history
of the Crater lake area. He has
reached a number of Interesting con
clusions which he plans to announce
In published form when his Crater
lake studies are completed.

ron was a member of the Crater Lake

instructor in voice in the Ohio uni
versity. Mr. Barron related experl-
encea on an attempted Bkyllnc trail
hike from Mt. Hood to Crater lake
this summer. Ten days from Mt
Hood, his only psck horse broke away
and disappeared, leaving the Barrens
stranded high in the Cascades. The
horse was never found. The trip nao
to be abandoned In favor of auto
mobile travel.

Nippon's warriors after nand-to-hand
fighting. Time and again waves of
Japanese attackers, bayonets gleam
lng. charged the Chinese lines, final
ly the defenders fell back.

Thus Japan gained revenge for her
early defeats at Woosung in 1933,
but only at heavy sacrifice.
For the first time Japanese artil
lery reinforcements moved Into the
International settlement. Four-Inch
and six-Inch guns, mounted on cater
