CRACKSMEN FAIL
10 OPEN SAFE IN
IE OFFICE
Stat police tra today InvMtlgtt
tng tb attmptd safe robbery of
the Gllmore Oil company plant on
the south Pacific highway some time
late Wednesday night or early yes
terday morning.
The Knall. burglar-proof safe ol
reinforced steel and concrete, which
is located In the main office of the
plant, was partly demolished by
charge of nltro-glycerine, state po
lice said, but the safe-crackers were
unable to blast it open.
The attempted robbery was report
ed to state police yesterday by
George B. Jale, district manager,
after he had discovered the dam
aged vault when he opened the
plant.
State police said the dial of the
snfrt had been smashed off and ft
portion of the safe blown through
the. door from the force of the ex-
plosion. Light In the office were
also broken by the blast.
Although no important clues were
discovered, state police stated they
found several iron pins and a long
Iron rod apparently used In an at
tempt to open the safe.
Entrance to the office was gained
by breaking out the glass In the
front door and opening it from the
Inside, state police said.
Several persons living near the
plant told police they heard two
explosions about 11 p. m. Wednes
day, whleh may have been caused
by the unsuccessful robbera.
State police are of the opinion
that the cracksmen became frighten
ed when their charges of nitro
glycerine failed to open the strong
box, and fled.

Soothing the factional ly-spl It dele
gates with his presence and his words,
th bushy-browed, unsmiling Lewis
sftid: "Your fight now la to preserve
your union.
Lewis arrived virtually In the midst
of a nother floor battle between
"progressive" and "unity" factions
such as have torn the convention
since It opened Monday."
Lewis said he came here "not to
address the American people on na
Monfll Issues of Import." btit to ad
dress the UAW members who had
organized in the face of "corpora
tlons and Industries which frowned
upon the right to organise, denied
that privilege and sought to prevent
that organization with every known
form of opposition."
Must Fight
"Freedom must be fought for," he
declared, "and we must fight to pre
serve freedom."
Speaking, h said, as a "member
of the family," Lewis declared the
convention "shouldn't permit itself
to become engaged In a political con
test and rivalry to the point where
It may affect the integrity of the
union.
"Other unions," he continued, "will
need your strength and time to lift
them to your status today."
"The CIO has no quarrel with the
AFL as such," Lewis seld previously.
"We did not undertake to organize
the organized but to organise the un
organized, which we are doing with
such tremendous success.
Shame on Green
"William Green, to his eternal
shame, demanded (In the General
Motors strike) that the governor of
Michigan prevent any agreement be
Ing made between the United Auto
mobile Workers and General Motors.
"The traitor. Green, lent strength
to thow already strong. His drool
ing lips mouthed e denunciation of
the CIO and the UAW. He shamed
00.000 members of the United Mine
Workers who had honored him."
Lewis said "a traitor Is really an
annoyance, like a flea on a dog."
Later, he said: "The CIO Is not the
virtuous, modest kind Little Lord
Pauntleroy that the American Fed
eratlon of Labor Is."

Fischer, defending champion, trailed
Ray Billows, New York state cham
pion by one hole at the end of the
first 18 holes of their 36 hole semi
final match In the national amateur
golf championship today,
Fischer assumed a lead at the third
hole and held It through the seventh
but Billows squared It at the eighth
and went up for the first time In
the ninth. A great shot at the nth
resulting In a birdie two sent the
Poughkeepsle player two up but
Fischer came back with two holes
won In a row to square matters.
The champion went down again at
the short 16th when he was wild
and wlldness cost him another hole
at the 17th. The tall Clnclnnatlan
hit two big woods at the 18th to
ptve the way for a birdie that re
duced the New Yorker's lead to one,
The title holder was wild, afflicted

Parents of the three girls can give
no reason for their sudden disappear

Eunice Lovell McCabe, 13. of 318
East Main street, told city police that
she wa at the stage depot with her
three friends when they bought tlck-
ets-for Ban Francisco. She said that
she was going with them but backed
out at the last minute. She also told
city police that all three girls had
their hair marcelled before leaving
and that one purchased a new hat in
addition to the dress. Little Eunice,
like the girls' parents, could give no
important reason as to why they left.
except to state that they "wanted to
get out and see the world."
San Francisco authorities were no
