today 65.000 retired trainmen will re
ceive pensions totaling M.000,000 this
month.
Murray Latimer, board chairman.
said the schedule congress approved
two months ago probably will pro
vide social security payments of about
$8,000,000 monthly for about 100.000
workers by the start of the new year.
Congress enacted the new legisla
tion to assuro old-age benefits to
this group of workers who were ex
cluded from the social security act.
The supreme court bad Invalidated a
previous statute, but railroads agreed
not to contest the new law.
The board has about ai43.0O0.000
available for payment of the pensions
until next July 1. Congress appro
priated (99.800.000 and made avail
able another 143.000,000 allocated for
payment, under the Invalidated
statute.
The act provides for voluntary re
tirement at es on a maximum
monthly penalon of 1130; pensions
for total and permanent disability;
transfer of those on private railroad
pension rolls to the national rolls,
and death benefits.
To finance these payment, the act
levies equal taxes on the railroads
and their employes through gradu
ated Imposts on payrolls. The levtes
begin at S i percent and eventually
will reach a maximum of 7 percent.

talk on agriculture, which was very
much appreciated by all.
We were also honored by other
visitors from Oranta rasa. Foots
Creek, Bluckwell hill and other places
In the valley. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon,
Mrs. Zotalla and two children, Jerry
and Grace, ot Grants Pasa put on a
very fine program for lecture hour.
Mrs. Nina W. Gordon sang two songs,
accompanied by our pianist, Mrs.
Beatrloe Oalbreath. Little Jerry Zo
talla played several pieces on his ac
cord lan; Grace, the small sister, sang
several pieces. Come again, neigh
bors. Mrs. Zotalla told ua about the
cheese factory she and her husband
are having built In Oranta Pass, and
they would like patronage from this
county as well as Josephine.
It seems our young Grange folk
are suddenly getting the marrying
bug. On Wednesday evening Miss
Nina Croft and Floyd Walsh were
married In the Orange hall and re
ceived a very fine sendoff from O ran
ge ra and their friends, numbering
more than 100 guests. Tbey also re
ceived many beautiful gifts. Tbey
left Thursday night to get back to
his business In Mehama, Ore., Best
wishes follow them.
Another loyal Oranger, Miss Lois
Johnston, was married to Phyllis
Simmons at a beautiful ceremony at
the bride's home under a lovely arch
of flowers and greenery. The bride
wore a gown of taffeta and carried
a bouquet of beautiful flowers. Miss
Simmons, sister of the groom, waa
bridesmaid. She was dressed In an
orchid gown and carried flowers. Burl
Johnson, brother of the bride, waa
beat man. The marriage ceremony
was performed by Rev. Springe- of
Medford. The Grangers all Join In
wishing them a long married lite.

meeting, followed by refreahments.
A beautiful wedding cake, made by
Mrs. Wilbur Martin, was cut by the
bride.

engagement of Miss Evelyn Martin
and John Novak of Grants Pass, the
wedding to take place In September

day at the home of Mrs. Rosa Oay
and Mlsa Alyce Harper In Riverside
for an all-day meeting with a cov
ered dish luncheon at noon. Seven
teen visitors war present.
The day was apent sewing, visiting

village, tucked away on the banks of
the Miami, la ready to stuff Its ears

At five cents a shotgun shell the
average cost the 1000 marksmen will
shoot up a total of $50,000 In am
munition, the exact amount of the ,
prize list, as they fire at more than .

shotgun shell carrying an ounce and
an eighth of shot, the clay target
breakers will toss about 78,136
pounds, or 39 tons, of lead Into the .
area In front of the traps.
A quarter-mile of traps, each
trap accommodating five marksmen,
stretches out In front of the club
house of the permanent home ot
the A. T. A. here, and those traps
will be busy from 8 a. m. until night
fall each day ot the big tourney. No
wonder the townspeople, their quiet
usually broken only by traffic, stuff .,

Only Novices Win
The squads of five are permitted
to fire only 38 shots from any one
trap, and each 38 Is divided Into
rounds of five which must be fired
from different posts at each trap. :

40 different positions, eliminating

targets emerge at 60 miles an hour.
The low-average group shoots from
1 16 yards, while others are graded be
tween those points, according to the
aversget they have built up for the
year on targets In registered snoots.
No champion has ever repeated In
the grand, for, ones a man wins, be
Is relegated to the back reaches of
the trap, from where the flying clays
have all the advantage. .

field, O., broke 100 targets in a row
to take ths Orand American In 1936.
Although he's the only man to have
taken part In every Orand American
program, and has won many other
trapshoot titles, ht's never won an
other Orand American.

ust 81 at Detroit.
In ' trapshootlng, the marksman
stands on a fan-shaped, tlve-bladed

front of blm. Ths targets leave the
trap st any angle within a 130-degrea
limit, travel at close to 60 miles an
hour, generally on a slightly-ruing
trajectory.
In skeet the targets art teased
from two trap bouses, plsoed on op
posite sides of ths Held. Ths marks
man shoots around a "circle," firing
from In front of each trap house at
ths target, which always take ths
same Una of flight, and then swing
Ing around In half-circle from oas
trap bouse to ths other, firing from

Don't Allow Accidents
Skeet enthusiasts declare their
sport la mors similar to field shooting
than trapshootlng, as tbe marksman
gets more peculiar angle shots. In.
