SALEM. Aug. 24. (Jp) The climax
of summer full of political activity,
something unusual In an off-year, U
expected to occur within two or three
weeks when a successor must . be
named for Claude MoColloch, Demo
crtlc state chairman who will re
sign his post before becoming federal
district Judge.
Democratic leaders assume MoCol
loch, after his return from Washing
ton, D. C, will call the 36 state com
mitteemen together and will tender
his resignation. But Jf MoColloch does
not call a meeting, Nadle Strayer of
Baker county, vice chairman, would
rlM to the post for the rest of the
term.
Six geek Job
Six prominent Democrats are re
ported to bo after MoColloch's Job.
One of the leading candidates Is John
Beckman, Multnomah county chair
man, who la reported to have dropped
from the bandwagon of Governor
Martin.
Bock man's entry In the race Is con
strued to mean that W. L. Qosslln,
secretary to Governor Martin and past
president of the Young Democrats of
Oregon, will not be a candidate, as
the two are close friends. Oosslln Is
expected back In a few days from In
dianapolis, where he attended the na
tional convention of Young Demo
crats.
Other candidates Include U. 8.
Burt of Oorvallls, Jack Caufleld of
Tillamook county, Walter B. Olea&on
of Portland, Jack Allen of Pendleton
and A. M. Dnlrymplc, tax collection
deputy In the Marlon county sher
iff's office.
Say Strtwer Thrnuxh
The Oregon Democrat, party pub
lication, comes forward with a charge
that "the blg-wlgs of the Republican
high command" plan to run Secretary
of State Earl Snell for U. 8. senator,
asserting that Senator Stelwer will
not run.
The publication snys the Repub
licans feel that Snell is a better vote
gotter than Stelwer. and thus would
make a better race against Willis Ma-
honey, nuld to be the Democratic
hope for Steiwer's position.
Snell remains riose-mouthed about
his political ambitions, but persons
clow to him assert he ptans to run
