President Roosevelt turned thumbs
down today on a proposal that .the
federal government chtp In 1500.000
for a permanent memorial to Will
Rogers, humorist killed In a plane
crash.
Vetoing a bill by which the gov
ernment would cooperate with Ok
lahoma In building a memorial at
Claremore. Okla., the president said
the bill failed to specify the type
of memorial. He declared the "be
loved" humorist would have wanted
a "living" one to gladden 'those he
left behind."
Congress should reconsider the
form the memorial "should properly

In the house. Representative Nich
ols (D., Okla.) moved to override
the veto but withdrew the motion

The C. I. O. sawmill union announc
ed today plans for a mass offensive
Monday to reopen Portland's seven
sawmills which closed this week as
a result of picketing by the A.F.L.
Harold Prltchett of Vancouver, B.
C, president of the International
Woodworkers of America, said the
mills' 3,500 C. I. O. employes would
appear at the plants at the regular
opening hours and demand their Jobs.
If the operators refused to re-open,
he said. It would "prove definitely col
luaion between operators and the
teamsters' union."
Mill owners had expressed fear that
their products would be boycotted by
the A. F. L. teamsters If they oper
ated their plants with C. I. O. em

DEAD BODY CLUE
TO LOST HEIRESS

woman whlQh Capt. William Babcock
said "could possibly be that of Mrs.
Alice McDonel) Parsons," missing
Long Island heiress, was found to
day In Long Island soiled.
Mrs. Parsons, socially prominent
member of a wealthy New York
family, disappeared from her home
at Stony Brook. Long Island, last
June 0 under circumstances which
even the country's most noted In
vestigators failed to explain.
A supposed ransom note demand
of 925.000 for her safe return was
found In Mrs. Parsons car. but state,
local and federal officials who Join
ed the search for her never deter
mined, officially, whether her dis
appearance was kidnaping, suicide
or murder.

HOLLYWOOD DEATH
HOLYWOOD. Aug. 21. (UP) An
autopsy was ordered tonight by Coro
ner Prank Nance into the death of
blonde Jane Weir. 31-year-old screen
actress, when her attending physi
cian refused to sign a death certifi
cate. The young actress had an appen
dectomy performed two weeks ago
and apparently was recovering from
the surgery when she suddenly be
came seriously 111. A blood transfu
sion 'failed to aid her and She died
early tody.
Her physician, Dr. M. .G. Hr-nry,
refused to sign the certlfc-te when
a post-mortem examination failed to
disclose the cause of death, he re
ported to Coroner Nance.
Nance ordered Autopsy Surgeon Dr.
Frank Webb to make an official ex
amination Monday.

born missionary was showing pictures
of Russia and giving accounts of the
conditions there which was very In
teresting.
Main business of the evening was
making plans for the 'fair to be held
in Gold Hill. Sept. 18.
Live Oak Grange will have a booth
as usual and their hot hamburger
stand which has proved so popular.
H. E. club met Aug. 13 at the
home of Mrs. Effle Bsdley on the
hlehway. Only nine ladles were
present. Pieces of work were taken
home by each lady to sell In the
stand at the fair. At the close of
the afternoon dainty refreshments
were served by the hostess.

John Montague, the golf wturd of
the film colony, was speeding east
ward tonight, confident that he
could convince a New York Jury
that he was a "man reincarnate"
and as such warranted acquittal on
a seven-year old robbery charge.
He signed a waiver of extradition
as "aLverne Moore, known as John
Montague." Laverne Moore, he ex
plained, was a "wild young kid" who
ran afoul of the law In a road
house robbery near Jay. N. Y., in
1930. After that alleged escapade he
came west and became popular with
the movie stars who marveled at
his prodigious feate on the golf
links.
In that Interim, his attorney, Jer
ry Gelaler, contended at the extra
dition hearing before Oov. Frank
Merrlam, Laverne Moore became a
different man. He waa In fact. Gets-
ler argued, a "man reincarnate" and
waa willing to stake his freedom
on the proof of that contention.
"In the Interest of Justice. Mr.
Montague wishes to return to New
York, face trial and be exonerated
